This Sunday we turn back the clocks 1hour. This Tuesday the US might set back their country 50 years.
Just Saying...

We turned the clocks back last Sunday. Have you been walking around an hour ahead of the rest of us for a week?

Your unsolicited and impertinent prediction as to another nation's options is probably as reliable and accurate as your initial statement.

Well, Henry, the choice of any leader of any important country has repercussions on the rest of us. We're all linked in several ways nowadays, and the USA's selection of their President and his/her subsequent foreign policies will indeed have an effect on everyone.

You may or may not have noticed that I didn't say bad repercussions. I merely pointed out that in many ways(economically, ecologically,World Peace, World poverty, growth etc.) the main players among the nations are linked and mutually bound. A USA President's priorities and strategies will inevitably affect us all.

As regards MtGM's first response I thought previous threads had established that clocks are adjusted on different dates in different parts of the world.

As to the rest, I think John Donne put it very well in 1624:

John Donne
Meditation 17
Devotions upon Emergent Occasions

'No man is an iland, intire of it selfe; every man is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine; if a clod bee washed away by the Sea, Europe is the lesse, as well as if a Promontorie were, as well as if a Mannor of thy friends or of thine owne were; any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee....'

We cannot help but be affected by the election, though our views of it are irrelevant to the electors. I have no idea what the right choice will be, but I hope that those making that choice get it right. For everyone's sake.

Putting the clocks back and forward is basically a silly thing for us to do. Even more so when we do at on different dates in various parts of the world. And, I assume, in different directions in the two hemispheres.
...................

I get mildly irritated at the assumption underlying the motiof "set back their country 50 years", which is that there is some process by which automatically everything gets better just with the passing of time. Some do, some don't, some get worse.

Whether on balance 1962 was a better or worse time to be around than 2012 isn't that simple to decide. There are plenty of things to to worry about in a victory for Romney, but that wouldn't be anything to do with a fear he might bring back the Beatles.

1962? Not a chance. More like 150 to 200 years.

Putting the clocks back to me signifies officially the end of the summer. (What summer? I hear UK Catters cry). This year in particular putting them forward or backwards has been a complete waste of time, IMO.

I LOVE the clock change reflecting (as closely as possible) the activities of society. It lets kids stand at school bus stops in daylight and gives farmers extra daylight in plowing & harvesting seasons....etc.

Makes perfect sense to me............unlike the elderly lady I heard on a call-in radio show 40 years ago when they were first doing DST.
"Oh," she said, "I don't approve of this! It will confuse the chickens!"

Well, that there Native Brother obviously doesn't run a business where he would have to change his business hours twice a year... have two signs for his hours of business in his shop window, change his yellow pages ad twice a year... whatever. Why open your blanket business in an extra hour of darkness every morning?

And why wouldn't you change your hours of business to save energy and get more customers in your door during "daylight hours"? All this ANTI-talk to such a simple and convenient and energy saving and much safer way to do things? Odd to me.

It was also meant to be a light hearted poke at the Romney lovers. If you can't enjoy the joke it's not worth explaining. Most folks here at least took it for what it's worth (nothing).
I'm not really interested in defending a stupid joke any more than I want to hear why Romney would be good for anything.
And make no mistake the rest of the world cares about who the US gets in.
The republicans are gonna bankrupt their country by overspending on wars they shouldn't be in and the asshole we have for PM wants to follow suit.

Why would it be any harder to change your hours of opening to match the season, as I imagine happened in the old days, rather than have to change all the clocks and so forth every few months regardless of whether it suits you or not?

For the reasons I stated. And, it's every six months. And everyone knows it. And it's been accepted in most places all over the world as a good idea, a money saver and an energy saver.

HEY! YOU KIDS STAY OFF OF THAT OLD MAN'S LAWN! He likes the blades of his grass to stand up straight so don't walk on them! Kids, eh?

It's not like cutting the bottom off a blanket and sewing it onto the top it's more like pulling the blanket up to your nose when it's hanging down 1foot below yer feet.

When daylight saving first started in some states in Oz nigh on forty years ago, people were worried that the extra hour of daylight would put the hens off laying, the cows off milking, and make the curtains fade. I'm still waiting for the evidence that it does........

In many places businesses are required to post their operating hours. Many other places do it as a convenience for the customers. For those who don't have a storefront location, there's advertising on billboards and other signs, as well as those on the internet and in the yellow pages (where those still exist).

The cost of changing the "clock times" in all the published stuff could easily cost a small business at least hundreds of dollars, and changing the 80% of the internet that's nothing but advertising could run into millions (or more).

Changing the clocks (or just shutting them off) costs very little, and it works quite well now that most are used to the change.

It doesn't confuse the chickens or the cows. It merely puts the people nearer to the clock (sunrise and sunset) that the critters are already going to be using, so it only confuses the less clever critters (like us).

An additional benefit of having a couple of such changes each year is that it provides an opportunity for reminding people to put new batteries in their smoke, CO, and propane detectors and without the reminders we'd all be blown away or up in smoke, because people otherwise would never remember to do it. (In many places if your neighbor explodes you'll very likely burn too, for those who need a selfish reason.)

John
