This update is a bit late coming because I have only just found this site.

A huge thanks to everyone who attended Ivors celebration and who generously donated to the Sheffield Childrens Hospital. A final sum of £1255.00 was raised and subsequently forwarded to the charity by Bert Cleaver, in Ivor's memory.

Philip.

Last night (Tuesday 20th.) was the first practice for Barnsley Longsword following Ivor's funeral. We felt it right not to cancel but get down to brass tacks, as Ivor would have wished.
It was an excellent practice which saw us working on detailed aspects of the sword dance - again, just as would have happened had Ivor been there, which in a way he was.
Though there was an empty chair that is impossible to fill, his sprit was with us and we could all feel it. Between practice spots, there was much reminiscence and smiles along with the odd thoughtful moment.

What a wonderful tribute to a truly remarkable person. The rafters really raised with the singing at the crematorium and the dancing was excellent. such a plethora of costumes, signified the diversity of his interests and all contributed to a joyful farewell to Ivor. I felt privileged to have been there.

If you can have a funeral to be proud of, that was it. I have never seen so many Ring Squires and EFDSS Gold badge holders in one place. The various performances and tributes were impressive.
Ivor was a truly remarkable man and the respect and affection for him held by so many people was amply demonstrated in Grenoside Crematorium. No tears, but lots of lumps in throats.

Very well attended and Longsword and Morris teams and a plethora of EFDSS and Morris Ring chaps a two hour session of dancing and thanks to Ivor for all his hard work on dancing instruction

Then a wake at Wortley club to meet many people I personally have not seen for many years

A good send off for a dedicated dancing guru

god bless Ivor

I only heard today via 'listening again' to Dave Eyre's folk show. I think I must have known Ivor for about 42 years, ever since I joined Handsworth Traditional Sword Dancers. At that time Ivor was still dancing with Handsworth (yes, he did).

After I moved to France in 1987 I rather lost touch but used to see Ivor (and Ken) if we managed to get over and up to Handsworth on Boxing Day. Sad to lose another member of the old brigade.

RIP Ivor,

Dave Higham.

Sad news. A great bloke who inspired many in sword dancing and morris.
I shall be going to Grenoside to say goodbye and celebrate his life together with many, I have no doubt.

Sad news indeed.

A great friend of Whitby and defender of all things sword.

We have lots of happy memories of Ivor over the years and the news comes as a shock in that the last time we saw and spoke to him he was his usual positive and seemingly indestructable self.

Very sad news indeed. My fondest memories of Ivor are in Antwerp over several trips to Langewapper's Mid-Lent weekend. I introduced Joyce to fruit Jenevers in De Vagant (subsequently known as The Gin Joint but that's another story). She rushed to the shop next door to buy a bottle to take home. Ivor said "Thank you very much, I have had her convinced that there was just Oude Jenever which she didn't like. Now you've put her onto something!"

Happy memories.

RIP Ivor

Yes Ivor has passed on.

Ivor received EFDSS Gold badge, a year or two ago and he filled in missing information on his early EFDSS work as a teacher at Whitby ff meeting (I was there) of I think social dance) pre TV times etc!

He was Squire of the Morris Ring twice I believe

A good friend of the late Father Ken Loveless and Bert Cleaver who now lives in the Barnsley area, BLST musician [Pipe and Tabor] himself a keen singer at Christmas of Sheffield Carols

Ivor was instrumental in introducing and setting up Barnsley Longsword team and was certainly an advisor in setting up Wath Morris Men (Wath ~ Tim Binns, Eric Presley, Dave Wigfield, I think initially?)

BLST came out of Barnsley folk club members and included, Derek Elliot, Jim Potter, Bob Musgrave, Dave Martin, Tom Owen, John Booker, and others in the early team (circa 1968?)

Mick Roberts, Ron and Jack Ledger I believe are key members currently or BLST

We are so so sorry - we had a lovely day together with Ivor & Phillip in October, where we talked and talked as usual. A very sad day, sorry to all who knew him and now for Phillip.

Blast. Fond memories of Whitby sword workshops, and of his time as Squire to the Morris Ring. He was a truly nice bloke to know, and very unassuming.

Ring announcement here.

Only met him once I think, on a Gorton Morris weekend in Barnsley - really nice bloke with an immense knowledge of sword and other such dancing.

A very sad loss

Ivor Allsop, longsword guru passed away on 2 November 2012. He is fondly remembered for the support and encouragement he gave to all teams both young and old on both sides of the Atlantic. He takes with him an unsurpassed knowledge of sword dancing in particular Longsword and his archival work was outstanding. He will be missed dearly.Gan canny Brian
