...for anyone unaware, after their fins are cut-off, they are often thrown back to sea alive, as their is so much more money in just the fins - very wasteful as well as very cruel.

Shark finning is illegal in Canada's fishery, I believe also the USA and many European countries.

Where there are not directed fisheries, many shark species are down in numbers because they are caught in other directed large pelagic fisheries,and either landed as a bycatch, or if not commercially valuable, thay are discarded at sea-rarely surviving the ordeal.

The Great White shark is a species at risk in some waters, such as in the eastern north Atlantic.

When my kids were about 8, 10, and 12, we took them for a week on Lopez Island in the San Juans in Puget Sound. I took the kids out in a rowboat on the glass-smooth water. We saw a beautiful, long Portuguese Man-of-War, trailing down several feet in the water.
Then the kids said excitedly, "Dad, look! Some fish are following us!" I looked, and the fish were sharks, several of them, each about 3 feet long. I didn't tell the kids the fish were sharks, but I did tell them to keep their hands out of the water. The sharks followed us quite a bit of the way home. They seemed curious, not aggressive.

Later I found out they were pupfish, an harmless variety of shark that tend to be curious like puppy dogs.

Now those kids are over forty, but I'll always remember that lovely afternoon in the rowboat with them. And I admit I was a bit scared, but I did my best not to let the kids know it.

Sharks are wonderful animals. Their evolution goes back at least 420 million years, twice as far back as dinosaurs. They are elasmobranch fish, far more primitive than modern bony fish. They have cartilaginous skeletons and no bones. They don't have swim bladders for buoyancy, so most species will settle on the seabed if they stop swimming. Their primitive homeostatic mechanisms prevent them from entering fresh water, but I doubt whether they care.

There are at least several species of freshwater sharks and some diadromous ones as well like the Bull shark which I've encountered way up the Caloosahatchee river here in SWFL.

The Nats used the Baby Shark dance in their dugout celebrations during their World Series run last year. The fans got into it as well.

You're right, I made a bit of a sweeping statement there and it was interesting to read what I had to read to correct meself... The bull shark is a great example of why I got that wrong, but it's worth pointing out that a good few freshwater "sharks" are not real sharks at all.

I heard many shark nets, such as those on the beautiful east coast of Australia, do not offer complete protection to swimmers by enclosing an area but, rather, are used to entangle and kill sharks, and other marine life, that venture into the area, sadly.
