JM: They have the same problem in parts of the US south, where all such drinks are called "coke."

Ah Jim, the perennial 'ginger' conundrum, which so puzzles non Glaswegians among others.
Ginger is a generic name for what the transponders call soda drinks.
The famous line that flummoxed visitors was when the wee boy went into the shop and said. "A bottle of ginger please" to which the shopkeeper replied "Aye what flavour?"

Another spelling problem: the writer/performer's name is Watt Nicoll.

THE WEANS MARCH TO THE MIDDEN is on the album "Watt is a Four Letter Word" (1968):

From the sleeve notes:

"THE WEANS MARCH TO THE MIDDEN is a monologue in broad Glasca relating the odd boasts of kids like who has the biggest or who can pee the farthest up the wall. These kids are arguing over a Ginger bottle."

First heard the hens march on the Swarbrick/Carthy album "Rags, Reels & Airs". There's some lovely sharp bowing in the B part which imitates the hens clucking.

There is a fiddle tune found at Education Scotland, called THE HEN'S MARCH TO THE MIDDEN.

There are several recordings at YouTube.

Spelling of the title varies:

* HENS / HEN'S / HENS'

* TAE / TO / THROUGH / THRU / O'ER / O'RE

* MIDDEN / MIDDENS
