Hi friends.
I'm writing to request some of those good mudcat vibes for Ebbie. A huge fire in her apartment building last night has displaced all of the residents, and done severe damage to the building. Ebbie is safe and sound, as is her beloved little dog, both of whom are secure in my home now. No one's been allowed back in as yet, so we don't know the status of her apartment, or her belongings. She has my computer and I'm sure will be checking in when she can. In the meantime, thanks for sending your kind thoughts her way. KT

Dear Elva, it's Bruce here. I expect the Mennonite community is now aware, but if in getting to them you need a place to stay for as long as you want with a room of your own, and Toto too, you have one here. Three squares a day, but the dog has to get used to the skunk. Charley has an attitude.

I was pondering today on the number of 'Catters in the US who have suffered severely from fire - and yet, I don't personally know anyone over here in the UK who has had a house fire. Given that it's only my personal view, is there a significant difference in the construction of houses in both countries?

In any case, my thoughts are with folks like Maeve and Ebbie who have suffered.

It varies widely in US markets... depending on age, locale...etc.

Nothing is a defense against intent or stupidity. Given that Ebbie had recently noted that she had 'issues' with the tenants, who knows what might have caused this tragedy?

FWIW, I don't think it would be really helpful for us to speculate too much in a public thread for various reasons, not least of which is for Ebbie's sake. Just my opinion.

As for house fires...the first time I ever knew anyone who lost their house to fire was after I joined Mudcat and since there have been several, as noted. I think it may seem unusually high because of the concentration we have here of a smallish community. That, with the high speed news we get everywhere, may make it seem more common?

Sure, I understand what you mean, John. Residents apparently were being allowed to claim belongings from some apartments... I just hope Ebbie has a chance to retrieve whatever will bring comfort and hope.

I will just point out that we are nearly finished cleaning and accessing things we pulled from the ashes. Our fire was just under 3 years ago. We couldn't retrieve anything for a couple of weeks...just before Christmas. When we could, we boxed up anything that looked important, knowing we weren't able to make clear choices while clearing the ruin by hand. It took 1 1/2 years to empty the foundation and have it bulldozed in preparation for building again.

Back to Ms Ebbie for whom I have the utmost respect and affection. She'll make it through to the sun.

Hi everyone!
I've been without phone or Internet access for the last couple of days, which is why it's taken me until now to offer you an update. The good news is, it appears that Ebbie's apartment has been spared flames!! And, it seems it was also spared the full on blasts of water! Although it's a bit damp, there is no standing water anywhere in her place! There is smoke damage to deal with of course, pervasive as it is, but still, this is such wonderful news to us, as you might imagine! Thank you all so much for your messages of support and care. Ebbie says to let you know that she so appreciates your good thoughts, and that right now, that is all she needs. I'll post an update when I have one. For now, please know that you are all loved and deeply appreciated, by both of us! What a great place this is!

Hearing that your apartment was spared, but for a bit of smoke damage, is a wonderful thing to hear first off in the morning!

A good and inexpensive way to get rid of smoke odor in clothing is to put a drop (and I really mean just a very small amount) of anise oil in the wash water. You'll want to get rid of the smoke in your clothes but not smell like licorice.

Oh, great news that her 'stuff' is mostly ok! I hope there is a way for her to find better & safer lodging somewhere. I'm sure that good housing is scarce in Juneau right now, but looking is still an option.

Oh, that is such good news. Even if Ebbie is unable to move back into the building her possessions should be recoverable. I know at the end of the day it's only 'stuff', but our stuff is part of our lives.

Just a point of clarification- though the apartment was spared flame and flood, the building is in need of serious repair or demolition. She'll not be living there again. The good news is, I'll have a very cool roommate for a while!
I had to go away for a bit and Ebbie's had lots of folks looking out for her. Thanks, everyone, for being part of her net! I gave her a "Life is good" shirt to wear. 'Tis.

Oh my, Oh my. What can I say! With my permission, KTk put this on I can only say that I wanted/want your good thoughts. l And I've got 'em. There ain't nothin' better.

I am the most fortunate of beings. All of the tenants essentially got out of there with the same thing: our pet(s) and the clothes on our backs but as it developed while I have suffered very little loss some of the tenants lost all of their belongings, including actual cash. They have all been put up in various hotels so nobody has gone cold or hungry. Juneau is a WONDERFUL town filled with amazing people.

I personally am experiencing only good things. One of the very best is being here at KT's. Can you imagine anything better? KT is out of town at the moment but I am ensconced in her home with LOADS of food and an amazing view out the windows - homes on the hillside below, a wide strip of the ocean beyond and a mountain ridge on the far side of the channel. I keep forgetting how uniquely wonderful it is. And KT, I wear the Life is Good t=shirt to bed every night.

Cheering for you, Ebbie. And wear a mask over your nose and mouth when you go to get whatever is salvageable. Even after fires are out there are still lots of bad-news particles hanging around and they aren't good for people to breathe in.
