Heard this plaintive Civil War song (I think) on NPR and jotted down the first verse:
O they say that the war's nearly won
& declare there's a change in the wind
& my feet stumble on & a year's come and gone;
O they say that the war's nearly won

Anyone know the song? It has a beautiful minor melody and three or four more verses (of which I can reproduce only snippets). Thanks for any info!

The lyrics were posted in this post: They Say That The War's Nearly Won in the Greatest Anti-War Song Ever? thread. It was posted by Jean Richie, who may have written it, but it wasn't clear in the thread. She may pop by and tell you (or someone else may).

Jean also posted the song in this post in thread: Can newly composed song become folk song , where she confirms that she wrote it. It's called The Soldier and appeared in her 1971 anthology of songs Celebration of Life.

An embarrassed thank you! I don't know which is worse: not to have recognized Jean Ritchie's voice on NPR the other day or not have recognized what a great song "The Soldier" was when I hummed through her collection four decades ago. Not the first time this has happened to me--always a song with an "off-beat," not immediately accessible melody--and it makes me wonder how many other treasures sit on my bookshelf, just waiting to be SUNG.
It would help if I kept up with the forum. . .
