Subject: Gig and a sore throat
From: GUEST,Nick Dow
Date: 14 Nov 12 - 05:41 AM

Had a sore throat for two weeks. In desperation took anti biotics to get through a couple of gigs, sore throat returned as I half expected.
It's not that bad but effected my voice a bit at Grimsby Folk Club the other night (Great gig by the way)
I went down to my local chemist who is lso a choral singer and asked for help. He came up with a new one to me which I will share with you.
Gargle with Port Wine (spit out if you're driving-and preferably for the rest of us not while your driving) He swears by it. It got him through a week of singing.
I'm playing Silverdale Folk Club tonight. I'll report back.
(Picked up a small bottle of Port for £2.95-If the throat don't kill me the port probably will)

Good luck - and enjoy what you can of the port!

Very occasionally I've had a bad stomach on the day of a gig, with squits imminent. A glass of port and brandy mixed and taken just before the gig started always settled my tum enough for me to get through the gig without a discomfort break...

Try "Vocalzones" Nick - they have saved me many times. You can get them at Boots or Superdrug.

I know its difficult to cancel and I know I've sung when I shouldn't have but you should never sing with a bad throat as its only going to knacker it further Plus and a big plus, the audience doesn't want your bad throat.
Stay at home

Not an option mate! I will have to be half dead and deaf and dumb before I let a club down. Bad throat (and it's not that bad) or not I'll be there.
If I can do a radio show with a burst appendix (honestly) I can sing a few songs after a gob full of Port.:-)

Gargle-and-spit-out works for me too, but with Bourbon.

'Tho I always worry about driving with it on my breath, even though I didn't consume any. If I were a cop, I wouldn't believe me either.

Port is no good for me, it gives me gout, STILL IT MIGHT BE ALRIGHT IF I SPAT IT OUT.

Might be a long shot but it's worth a try. A pinch of ground ginger on a teaspoon of honey. Helped me but not two of the other three. I think one of them was worse. Of course, I didn't say anything. >;-)

Readers will know that I was having some throat trouble - so I picked up a type of throat spray from a natural/alternative health products store - 'Echinaforce' (A.Vogel) - it worked wonders.

Great gig last night and port wine gargle works! I was coughing a bit between songs, but I feel fine today.
I'm resting the voice for Bedworth Kitty.

I had a terrible throat a few weeks ago, and my voice just couldn't cope with the singing, it effected my breathing too, catching me out and making my eyes water. However, VOCALZONES are brilliant, and got me through. Also - continuously sipping water was essential! (I suppose we should be doing that anyway!) My voice took weeks to get back to normal, and you have to be patient or you will strain it.
One of the suggestions I had was gargling with vinegar.... cider I think! Yuk! And that awful cough medicine, gargle till you heave... I didn't try it!

And honey and lemon is soothing, you can make it and sip it after it goes cold!

I use Fisherman's Friends (the lozenges, not the singers!) - they're pretty strong and numb the throat enough to sing, if you time it right. An alternative is to make up a very strong tea of pure ginger teabags, and add honey - ginger also has a numbing effect.

I've tried Vocalzones, and they're just not strong enough to have much effect (IMHO).

This comes directly from an auctioneer I know who got it directly from Liza Minnelli when she was in town for a concert: Traditional potato chips (potato crisps), the greasy salty kind.
