A New Recording of the Song Cycle - The Road Goes Ever On by Donald Swann/text by J.R.R. Tolkien from The Lord of the Rings
I posted this under an older thread but it seems to be lost in all the other posts, so I am starting this new thread. I am looking for copyright information.

Forty years ago I sang the song cycle "The Road Goes Ever On" by Donald Swann/text by J.R.R. Tolkien) in the Carleton College Concert Hall, Northfield, MN, Feb. 6, 1972. It was recorded by the St. Olaf College radio station, played on air, and a reel-to-reel tape given to me. I probably listened to it once or twice and then put it away. Since I no longer have a working reel-to-reel recorder to play it on, I recently gave it to Bob (Deckman) Nelson to digitize. It's quite amazing to hear it again after all these years.

You can now listen to it on my website here.

I am thinking of producing a CD for this, but need to get info on licensing (both the music and the graphic art). I've tried to find the copyright holders, with no success. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate that. I tried emailing Donald Swann Archivist:Leon Berge with no response.

Cheers, S, in Seattle

Donald Swann website: http://www.donaldswann.co.uk/songcycles.html

I'm sure if you contact them, you can find the publisher and
licensing agent.

Best wishes, Thomas.

Not sure if this is one of the Tolkien 'songs' that Donald Swann put out on Argo (Record label) back then - One side was 'Tales of Tom Bombadil' , the other was the Elvish stuff . Not a lot of info I'm afraid , but MAY help your search .

"Text (C) George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1962
          J.R.R. Tolkien, 1967
Music (C) Donald Swann 1967"

From the 1968 edition of "The Road Goes Ever On."

From Wikipedia it seems that George Allen & Unwin have now become part of HarperCollins

Thanks, I did get a nice reply from Leon Berger, the Donald Swann Archivist on the Donald Swann website. I need to go through Harper-Collins publisher. I am undecided whether to proceed with a CD. However there's only one commercial recording (LP) of the song cycle that I know of with Donald Swann on piano and William Elvin singing, and that is out of print and hard to find.

Stew: : "UNDECIDED" is not a decision ... it's a wrong decision. You need to make a positive decision and decide to produce the CD. Should you do so, decide postively that is, then it would be the right decision. And then you could say that you made a very decisive decision ... so to speak!   bob

The Tolkien estate are ever vigilant with copyright issues. They are even threatening to sue Warner Bros for marketing the Hobbit film in ways not authorised- including one-arm bandits.
