Read a review in the morning paper about a search engine called DuckDuckGo. Supposedly been around for a year or two and growing in popularity. One of the features is privacy. Curious if there are any DuckDuck users on Mudcat. Would like to know a little more before trying it.

AFAIK it's an open source project.

I've not tried it but I've noticed that some of the Linux distros are pushing it as an alternative to Google, Bing and the other commercial search engines.

Sure.. I've used it. Also use "Ixquick" and "StartPage" which is a clone. They seem to respect privacy just fine. I think some piggy-back off of Google and don't always get exactly the same results, but I have seen no reason to avoid them.

Just given it a try and it seems to give similar results to Google searches for the two or three I tried.

It was available in the drop down list next to the address bar in Firefox so easy to access.

I will try it for a while and see how it goes.

I have Duck duck Go in my favorites and use it if Google is not helpful enough. I like it and it has helped.

Bill, it was you about a year back Bill who turned me on to Ixquick. (Something you mentioned on Mudcat.) I hope they start e-mail soon. I'm getting really fed up with gmail.

Thanks for the comments on DuckDuck and Ixquick. My son is due in a couple of days and I will get his opinion as well. I have been relatively satisfied with Google but resent to a degree the tracking of every move.

I have been trying it recently and it seems OK. You do have to set it up as it does not automatically detect where you are. You have to tell it but once you've done that it seems fine.

It does NOT seem to handle "quotes ".

While loath to use "G " its ability to sort 24 hour, week, year...is a major positive.

With the extended weekend off...it will be fun to play with the other offerings.

DDG is just Bing with a privacy-scrubbing front end.

Google (or any other individual company) is not really the problem as far as privacy tracking goes. It is more the leveraging of individually innocent information amongst a matrix of unconnected firms that has the real power to do spooky things.
