Subject: Lyr Add: BOYS OF THE ISLAND (Larry Gorman) From: Ed T Date: 19 Nov 12 - 07:23 PM BOYS OF THE ISLAND You sporting young fellows from Prince Edward Island, You think on your farms you are doing no good; With your minds never easy, continually crazy, To go off to Bangor and work in the wood. Well, a new suit of clothes is prepared for the journey, A new pair of boots made by Sherlock and Clark; And a fine kennebecker done up with good homespun, And then the young islander makes his embark. When he reaches Bangor he gets off at the station, And the woodsmen gaze on him all with the keen eye; But they know by the clothes that the youngster is wearing, 'Tis easy to see he's from old P.E.I. In Bangor they'll poison the youth with bad whiskey, To the devil they banish their whiskey and ale; And then on the corner they'll find the youth tipsy, They'll call for Tim Leary and drag him to jail. You may talk of your laws, by the mother of Moses, Sure I've seen better laws from the heathen Chinee; Where a man can get drunk and in comfort get sober, All under the shade of his mulberry tree. So come all you young fellows who want to leave farming Don't go to the woods where you're sure to meet harm Just take my advice and give heed to my warning Stay home on the island and work on the farm. ####.... Larry Gorman [1846-1917] of Prince Edward Island |

Subject: Lyr Add: SAUERKRAUT SONG (trad. Nova Scotia) From: Ed T Date: 19 Nov 12 - 07:53 PM SAUERKRAUT SONG Traditional Nova Scotia Folk Song 1. Now if you only listen to ye spake about, I'm going for to tell ye how to make the sauerkraut, The kraut's not made of leather as eff'rey one supposes, But of that little plant what they call the cabbage roses. Chorus: Sauerkraut is bully, I told you it is fine, Me thinks me ought to know 'em for me eats 'em all the time. 2. The cabbages are growing so nice as it could be, We take 'em and we cut 'em up the bigger as a pea, Me put 'em in a barrel and me stamp 'em with me feet, We stamp and we stamp for to make 'em nice and sweet. 3. Me put in plenty of salt so nice, don't put in no snuff, (sniff, sniff) Nor any cayenne pepper nor any of that stuff, Me put 'em in the cellar 'til it begins to smell, So help me twice me thinks it's nice, the Dutchmen like it well. 4. When the sauerkraut begins to smell and it can smell no smeller, PEEEEE-YOOOO!!!!!! We take it from the barrel that's way down in the cellar, We put him in the kettle and it begins to boil, So help me we can smell her round for fifty thousand and miles. |

Subject: RE: Wanted: Songs of Cape Breton and P.E.I. From: ollaimh Date: 19 Nov 12 - 09:34 PM that guy should get more than thirty days in the pictou county jail for that one. but the nova scotia government has two good song books, songs of nova scotia and songs of capre breton. alistair macgillivary edited the songs of cape breton, he also wrote song for the mira, and he may have edited the other. for pei teressa doyle recorded an outstanding album called prince edward isle adieu, with a dozen great traditional pei songs sung by one of the reat voices of out time.i especially love the title song "prince edard isle adieu" and "when johnny went plowing for kearon". which i sing, even though in the words of mirella from anne of green gables , i am a heathen nova scotian there is also a book of pei folk songs which i have burried somewhere. called "drive dull cares away" i think. if your still looking post and i'll get the info. we moved twice in two years and some of my books are hard to find. all the songs listed are also good. if you actually like country, then charlie mackinnon is your man. he wrote some good cape breton country, the best being "the green an lofty mountains by the waters of bra d'or" |
Subject: RE: Wanted: Songs of Cape Breton and P.E.I. From: ollaimh Date: 19 Nov 12 - 09:38 PM of course helen creighton, what ever her questionable political views and exploitation of the poor, did collect hundreds of nova scotia folk songs. perhaps thousands, and she aided the collection of gaelic songs of cape breton and acadien songs of nova scotia. she had neither french nor gaelic so she didn're arrange or edit the gaelic or french songs as she did with the english ones. and of course peggy seager wrote "the springhill minning disater" a song so good she is an honary nova scotian, and gorgiven for her connection to ewan maconman |
Subject: RE: Wanted: Songs of Cape Breton and P.E.I. From: Beer Date: 19 Nov 12 - 09:52 PM I have in from of me a record by Eddie Legere and he wrote "Spring hill Mine Disaster". Subject: Lyr Add: THE SPRINGHILL DISASTER OF 1958 (Ruddick) From: Beer Date: 19 Nov 12 - 10:06 PM I just checked and the song you are referring to begins with "In the town of Springhill, Nova Scotia Down in the dark of the Cumberland Mine". So it is not the same song. There is also this one that I sing. Dan Calder ^^ "THE SPRINGHILL DISASTER OF 1958" (Words and music by Maurice Ruddick) The twenty-third of October, we'll remember that day; Down the shaft underground in our usual way. In the Cumberland Pit, how the rafters crashed down And the black hell closed 'round us way down in the ground. Now when the news reached our good neighbours nearby, The rescue work started; our hopes were still high. But the last bit of hope like our lamps soon burned dim; In that three-foot high dungeon we joined in a hymn In that dark, black hole in the ground. Only God will ever know all that happened down there. How we watched Percy Rector die gasping a prayer, And young Clarke had his birthday, he thought, in his grave; After days of cruel torture we'd no hopes to be saved. We sang altogether, though racked through with pain. When they broke through we knew that our prayers weren't in vain. I crawled through the tunnel. They helped me along. I said, "Give me some water, and I'll sing you a song." I'll sing you a song of the bravest of men. And of those who remain to go digging again. And you boys up in heaven as you look on down, Don't forget to remember Springhill mining town, And that deep, dark hole in the ground. |
Subject: RE: Wanted: Songs of Cape Breton and P.E.I. From: ollaimh Date: 19 Nov 12 - 10:07 PM there three songs i know of about the sprghill mine disasters. two in french. one locally writen in english. all are in helen creightons books i thuink. i'd have to go look up the frecnh ones==so don't hold your breath.. there were several minning disasters at sprinhill going well into the nineteenth century. that coal had blood all over it. i was a kid during the most recent and most famous "bump"(locals call the clooapses bumps). i remember people glued to radios and the local doctors were all away up in springhill. we didn't have tv that i remember yet, or at least few did. it was gripping local drama and even as a eight year old i knew it. i lived in a rooming house in halifax while at university years later. one guy down the hall was a survivor of the last bump. nice guy. a bit odd. he occasionally said he found the pitch dark comforting, and used to sit in his room in the dark, with all the curtains drawn. other than that he had no injuries. i do ocasionally wonder what he thought about sitting in the dark? |
Subject: RE: Wanted: Songs of Cape Breton and P.E.I. From: Beer Date: 19 Nov 12 - 10:20 PM I was eleven living in West Chezzetcook just outside Dartmouth when the Bump occurred. 1958 it was. We had no T.V. so all ears were directed to the radio. Sorry Stringsinger forgettingg off track but we'll get back on very shortly. ad. |

Yes, I grew up in PEI. Locally formed pack ice (in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, on the north shore and Northumberland Strait in the South and western PEI shores)) should not be confused as Icebergs (that make their way each summer, southward to Nfld. from Greenland). BTW, the Gulf has been close to ice-free for the past few years. |

Subject: RE: Wanted: Songs of Cape Breton and P.E.I. From: Beer Date: 20 Nov 12 - 11:37 PM Historian George Arsneault (Whom I believe still resides in Charlottetown.)wrote about a Marie Theresa Caissie who died in a blizzard up in the West end of P.E.I. Angelia Arsenault as well as Heart Rouge recorded the song called " Marie Caissie" Here is a link to the song. http://youtu.be/TvjP2uTKIbk My mother was very upset when she heard the song because she said it was not true. "They brought my Aunt Marie in the house and she was not dead". Mum was about 5 years old Marie was about 52. She did die 5 days following with pneumonia. That would make her my Great Aunt I guess.
