Subject: RE: Wanted: Songs of Cape Breton and P.E.I. From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 22 Nov 12 - 10:16 PM Hi Frank, First let me say that I am honoured to have you respond to my reply to your posting! I have been a Weavers fan for many years and appreciate your legacy! While Cape Breton is a very musical island and many songs are composed here there is not a lot in English that would qualify as pure traditional. That is because French and Gaelic were the predominant languages until the early 1900's. There is all kinds of stuff written in English since then, but most of it has known authours. I am interested in your wife's family ties to the region as well. I would have loved to have met you both when you were here! Charlie LaRade who ran the music store in Cheticamp died a few days ago. He will be missed! The fiddler member of the Rankins was John Morris. His sister Raylene went to join him recently, so we are losing some of our stars. All being said if you want to PM me I can probably send you some of what you seek. Best regards' Sandy |

Subject: RE: Wanted: Songs of Cape Breton and P.E.I. From: Stringsinger Date: 22 Nov 12 - 03:25 PM Hi Sandy, Looking for trad ballads and folksongs from the region. The list given me is extensive and probably includes quite a bit. My wife, who loves to sing, has ancestral roots in both Cape Breton and PEI. We love the old folk songs best. Thanks for your info. Thanks to you all Ed T. and Beer, Olliamh and everyone. This will keep me busy for a while. I am grateful to you all. We visited the Cape and PEI and had a great time. We took the Cabot Trail, went over to PEI on the ferry and found music sessions that were delightful. Met Rita McNeil, a nice lady and went to the music festival in Long Pond, checked out the Country Music Store in Cheticamp and my wife found many people who looked just like her coming and going. We were impressed with the Rankins, Barra McNeil, the fiddlers, Ashley MacIsssac, the late Rankin brother fiddler, and so much unbelievable talent there. We ran into a fellow named Grady Poe in PEI. Does anyone know of him? Thanks again, Frank |

Subject: RE: Wanted: Songs of Cape Breton and P.E.I. From: Beer Date: 20 Nov 12 - 11:37 PM Historian George Arsneault (Whom I believe still resides in Charlottetown.)wrote about a Marie Theresa Caissie who died in a blizzard up in the West end of P.E.I. Angelia Arsenault as well as Heart Rouge recorded the song called " Marie Caissie" Here is a link to the song. http://youtu.be/TvjP2uTKIbk My mother was very upset when she heard the song because she said it was not true. "They brought my Aunt Marie in the house and she was not dead". Mum was about 5 years old Marie was about 52. She did die 5 days following with pneumonia. That would make her my Great Aunt I guess. These songs and others are on the CD "Song for the Mira" (ca. 1999)- a collection of Allister MacGillivray songs performed by other artists including John Allan Cameron, Phil Coulter, Frank Patterson, Barra MacNeils, et al. |

From: Ed T Date: 20 Nov 12 - 10:54 AM ""no icebergs in pei? ed t have you ever been on the north shore in the dead of winter? you can see lots of icebergs. one year they hit shore and the seal hunt was carried on directly from land right off the north shore of pei. we used to see icebergs even floating up the northumberland straight between nova scotia and pei in some years."" Yes, I grew up in PEI. Locally formed pack ice (in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, on the north shore and Northumberland Strait in the South and western PEI shores)) should not be confused as Icebergs (that make their way each summer, southward to Nfld. from Greenland). BTW, the Gulf has been close to ice-free for the past few years. |
