Subject: RE: BS: Prayers and Good Thoughts for Rap's wife From: Rapparee Date: 21 Nov 12 - 08:37 PM She's had a lousy day with her mother going into a hysterical fit (the 95 year old is dying of CHF, among other things) but my wife is doing okay (with the help of some ice cream and bourbon, not together). Pat does appreciate -- and needs! -- all the Mudcat mojo she can get to keep her psychologically and spiritually going right now. But as I said, physically (apart from the effects of stress and emotional exhaustion) she's okay. With luck we'll be home late on Saturday and she will spend at least a couple or three weeks at home in the mountains before we head bad East for Christmas. We may, of course, be there before we plan to.... |

Subject: RE: BS: Prayers and Good Thoughts for Rap's wife From: Rapparee Date: 21 Nov 12 - 08:56 PM I'll explain further. Her mother has been with hospice since about the first of October. Pat went out around Oct. 15, with the thought that her mother might not be alive when she got there. By strenuous efforts by Pat and her friends and family, her mother made what the hospice people called "a miraculous rebound" (eating more than 400 calories per day probably helped a lot). She has had, and needs, Aides 24 hours per day for her own safety; Pat arranged for that (yes, her mother can afford the care, there is no concern on that score). Now, six weeks after Pat left home (you get tired of the same clothes and living out of a suitcase) Pat is here in NW Indiana with me, where we intend to celebrate Tgiving with friends. Today her mother got a bill for the cost of the Aides and became hysterical. She called Pat and said some very hurtful things; Pat did what she could to calm her and when her mother hung up on her Pat called her Uncle and Aunt who live in the same retirement community. Pat also called the community medical center, the agency for the Aides, and the Hospice organization (among others). Finally a chaplain from the Hospice was able to talk Pat's mother down, into a calm state. Her mother is now embarrassed by her actions; Pat will call her tomorrow morning and wish her a happy Tgiving. Pat needs all the mojo and good wishes and prayers and whatever she can get and will for some time to come. We both realize that we might not even get to spend a week in Idaho before we have to fly to DC again, but we are prepared for that. It's just that it would be nice for Pat to get some different clothes, talk with her friends at home, and spend some time in her own nest before the need to do what will have to be done. |

Subject: RE: BS: Prayers and Good Thoughts for Rap's wife From: frogprince Date: 21 Nov 12 - 10:07 PM Request granted, big time,Rap. We had a couple of months with this sort of thing with my wife's father when he had a bad spell last year, but we've been fortunate in that he's been doing much better since. I've seen so many folks frayed down to their last threads dealing with aged parents. |

Subject: RE: BS: Prayers and Good Thoughts for Rap's wife From: Rapparee Date: 25 Nov 12 - 08:57 PM My wife flies to Merryland so much that she gets these drink coupons from Southwest Airlines. Coming back yesterday (I'm home now and so is she, at least for a while) we were an hour late getting off the ground in Chicago and she was tired. So she decided to use one of the coupons and swapped it for a glass of white wine. She got it -- full to the brim, probably a full six or eight ounces. By the time she'd finished we were getting ready to land in Salt Lake City and she we decided to overnight there rather than get in at 2 a.m. When we got to the motel her head hit the pillow and she slept for ten straight hours. The hospice people and the home care workers have both called and left messages. Pat was told that last night when the aide checked her mother's lips were blue. I don't know. I was taught that it's not okay to pray for someone's death, but it's okay to pray that God's will be done, I guess. And you could ask that S/He get a move on about it.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Prayers and Good Thoughts for Rap's wife From: ChanteyLass Date: 25 Nov 12 - 10:03 PM Oh, Rap, how grueling for your wife. I sometimes have prayed for myself or others to accept whatever is to come. I have also prayed for the best possible outcome, whatever it may be. |
Subject: RE: BS: Prayers and Good Thoughts for Rap's wife From: katlaughing Date: 25 Nov 12 - 11:40 PM I always give thanks for "this, or something better, for the good of all concerned," which, imo, leaves it up to the will of whatever diety one believes in. (The "this" of course being more specific, i.e. a swift and painless passing, or, swift return to health, etc.) keeping you in my thoughts.... luvyakat |
Subject: RE: BS: Prayers and Good Thoughts for Rap's wife From: Stilly River Sage Date: 26 Nov 12 - 01:49 AM A slow painful death is merciless for all concerned. My parents were divorced in the 1970s and Mom rarely spoke to him after that. When she was in the hospital dealing with metastasized breast cancer she remarked to us that when Dad died suddenly and unexpectedly of a pulmonary embolism that "your father got that right." I have to agree. Take care of yourselves, Mike. SRS (That sounds like a very awkward glass of wine on the plane! Next time have them pour half each into two glasses and you can share the bounty of the coupon!) |

Subject: RE: BS: Prayers and Good Thoughts for Rap's wife From: Bill D Date: 27 Nov 12 - 02:03 PM "I was taught that it's not okay to pray for someone's death,..." Mike.. when my father passed, he had been in constant discomfort for several years and couldn't be 'useful' anymore... When the doctor called us in and told us he was gone, I just said softly..."At least he doesn't hurt anymore." There's seldom an easy way to lose someone, but .... well, you know.... |
