My mother-in-law died today at about 3:50 p.m. EST. We'll be flying to BWI Saturday. The viewing will be (as of right now) Thursday and the funeral Friday. Burial will be around the middle of February in Arlington with my father-in-law (and her father, and uncles, and sister-in-law, and...).

Not much cheer, but we're glad it's over and she's at peace. I wish the rest of us were....

Mike.. when my father passed, he had been in constant discomfort for several years and couldn't be 'useful' anymore...

When the doctor called us in and told us he was gone, I just said softly..."At least he doesn't hurt anymore."

There's seldom an easy way to lose someone, but .... well, you know....

A slow painful death is merciless for all concerned. My parents were divorced in the 1970s and Mom rarely spoke to him after that. When she was in the hospital dealing with metastasized breast cancer she remarked to us that when Dad died suddenly and unexpectedly of a pulmonary embolism that "your father got that right." I have to agree.

I always give thanks for "this, or something better, for the good of all concerned," which, imo, leaves it up to the will of whatever diety one believes in. (The "this" of course being more specific, i.e. a swift and painless passing, or, swift return to health, etc.)

I sometimes have prayed for myself or others to accept whatever is to come. I have also prayed for the best possible outcome, whatever it may be.

My wife flies to Merryland so much that she gets these drink coupons from Southwest Airlines. Coming back yesterday (I'm home now and so is she, at least for a while) we were an hour late getting off the ground in Chicago and she was tired. So she decided to use one of the coupons and swapped it for a glass of white wine.

She got it -- full to the brim, probably a full six or eight ounces. By the time she'd finished we were getting ready to land in Salt Lake City and she we decided to overnight there rather than get in at 2 a.m. When we got to the motel her head hit the pillow and she slept for ten straight hours.

The hospice people and the home care workers have both called and left messages. Pat was told that last night when the aide checked her mother's lips were blue.

I don't know. I was taught that it's not okay to pray for someone's death, but it's okay to pray that God's will be done, I guess. And you could ask that S/He get a move on about it....
