Subject: Russell Family, Doolin, County Clare From: Alice Date: 29 Oct 99 - 03:19 PM A flute player from England who recently joined our session loaned me a record (Topic Records) called The Russell Family of Doolin, County Clare. The family are Miko, flute whistle, songs, Pakie on anglo concertina, and Gussie on whistle. There are nineteen cuts on the record, five of them medleys. The photos and album notes are very interesting. Anyone have more information on them? Alice Flynn |
Subject: RE: Russell Family, Doolin, County Clare From: jtt Date: 29 Oct 99 - 06:09 PM Ask in http://www.custysmusic.com - and if I have that address wrong, do a websearch for Custy's Music. This is a shop where all the traditional musicians hang out in Clare, and they bring out their own records too, and sell them online. Nice site, with glorious pictures (which I'm sure you can probably buy if you ask) by Pat Pidgeon, a local artist who does many of the Clare artists' album covers. |
Subject: RE: Russell Family, Doolin, County Clare From: Philippa Date: 29 Oct 99 - 09:20 PM Miko was the best known family member. He died in a car accident a few years ago. |
Subject: RE: Russell Family, Doolin, County Clare From: Ralf Weihrauch Date: 30 Oct 99 - 04:57 AM Miko Russell took part in the Irish Folk Festival Tour in Germany many times and there are a lot of fine live recordings on several samplers. If you are interested let me know, and I tell you where you can buy those CDs. Ralf |
Subject: RE: Russell Family, Doolin, County Clare From: Wolfgang Date: 03 Nov 99 - 02:05 PM Some Micho Russell songs though I must say I liked him better as an instrumentalist. Micho Russel has also a book, titled The Piper's Chair, tunes and stories mixed. The record you have on loan, Alice, is great. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Russell Family, Doolin, County Clare From: Bruce O. Date: 03 Nov 99 - 03:12 PM Wolfgang beat me to the link above. I have the LP (Topic 12TS251, 1975). The following year, 1976, I heard Miko sing "The Keech in the Creel" (and others plus instrumentals) at the Smithsonian Bicentenial Folk Festival in Washington D.C. ("Keech" is not on the LP.) |
