Arthur Suillivan was convinced that his oratorios were his real work: much taken aback when Queen Victoria, after conferring his knighthood, said "We shall have one of your great works performed for the guests at Windsor. I think The Gondoliers would be a suitable one". [That's the story anyhow!]

What your song means to you and what your song means to others are different and almost unrelated things. I doubt, for instance, that Hoyt Axton thought that "Jeremiah was a Bullfrog"(Joy to the World) was his masterwork, but it was his biggest hit. People like what they like, without much caring about the writer's creative arc.

If your song is the fulfillment of your craft, it is that to you, even if the only one that knows it is you. If, or when, you decide to play the song for others, it's up to them to make of it what they will.

I think that I have just finished the song that I was born to write. It has taken all of my 65 years and I'm convinced that everything that went before were apprentice pieces. The trouble is now is that I'm afraid to sing the damn thing in case I'm wrong or merely deluding myself. Oh woe is me...M
