The first one: Playtime Rhymes for Little People Is sang and played in an American bluegrass-esq fashion. Good singing and playing, female voice. The second one: Mother Goose Remembers Is equally good and sang and played by an English sounding folk group, concertina being the prominent instrument. The male singer sounds a lot like Martin Carthy (!) Both are thoroughly recommended. |

Subject: RE: Folky children's albums From: YorkshireYankee Date: 27 Nov 12 - 04:51 PM Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer have done absolute LOADS of kids' stuff (the great majority of their CDs & videos for kids have won "Parents' Choice" awards, American Library Association awards, and been Grammy Award winners/finalists. Even more importantly, kids like 'em a lot! (Links take you to their respective CDBaby pages, where you can find their kids' CDs as well as their other stuff) Richard and Jess's CD is another brilliant one for kids. AND I have to mention a CD for the parents of kids, A Parents' Home Companion, by Cathy & Marcy, which is one of my all-time fave CDs ever; has a bunch of songs that make me laugh out loud (literally), dealing with situations that all parents will relate to. It's a real gem! There's so much great stuff - have fun picking...! |

Subject: RE: Folky children's albums From: CupOfTea Date: 27 Nov 12 - 05:41 PM Oldie but goodie: Peter Paul & Mommy by Peter, Paul & Mary Barry Louis Polisar who made up some incredibly fun songs for kids to sing - I gave his albums as gifts when my niecelets were wee, back in the 1980s "You Can't say PFFFFT on the Radio" would raise the humidity in the room when they were singing it. Cat Tales by Cindy Mangsen isn't strictly a kid's album, but the theme is sure to please a cat loving child. John McCutcheon has two - Howdjado and can't remember the second - great singalongable stuff from a genuinely wonderful performer. Farther afield from folk, but *I* loved as a kid was a recording of Peter & The Wolf. It's been so many years since I've seen that vinyl, that I don't remember either orchestra or narrator. Along with folkymusic, perhaps consider some storytelling for kids? Dan Keding has some great albums - some with singing as part of the storytelling. There are several folk musicians who've done lullaby albums. Priscilla Herdman comes to mind, and possibly Anne Hills. If lullabies would work, try searching it on Mudcat for some singer suggestions. Consider if YOU have to listen to it repeatedly, that it's music you'd like, too! Very early childhood things like "Wee Sing" might drive you round the bend in large doses. It will be around $15 US to buy but then you can copy it for free if you work iwth needy children in a school, hospital, missionary group etc. It is going to be very nice. Probably out around Feb. |

They liked the Pete Seeger story/songs Abiyoyo and The Foolish Frog. There was a great Michael Cooney kids album on Front Hall that they and I really enjoyed. They also had a couple of Eric Nagler albums and a Valdy kids album. Another favourite was a Cathy Fink, Duck Donald and Peter Paul VanCamp album which I think was called I'm Gonna Tell. If that wasn't the title, it did have that great Rosalee Sorrels song on it. |

Subject: RE: Folky children's albums From: Joe Offer Date: 27 Nov 12 - 09:25 PM Ella Jenkins has done some wonderful stuff for children on the Folkways label. I don't think Dan Zanes gets the credit he deserves for exposing kids to traditional music. He has also recorded a number so songs from Carl Sandburg's American Songbag songbook. John McCutcheon did four seasonal albums for children, Autumnsongs and I bet you can guess the rest. My favorite is the winter one, which has a song about soup and another about the dangers of licking pump handles. Oh, and McCutcheon has an album called Bigger Than Yourself that has some great songs to teach kids the values of trade unions. One called "The Principle" is a classic. Harry Chapin's brother, Tom Chapin, has done some fascinating albums for children, and one with McCutcheon called Doing Our Job that is interesting but maybe more for adults. -Joe- |

She has her own website, http://www.priscillaherdman.com/, but you can get any of her CD's including her children's albums on CD Baby. You can also hear song samples from all of these albums on CD Baby. (not entire song) but will give you an idea of her singing from these albums. The album titles are: 1. Stardreamer 2. Moondreamer 3. Daydreamer I have heard Priscilla Herdman in concert and she has a lovely, lovely voice. Her children's albums are very good as are all her other albums! |

Instead of having the 2/4 rhythm, it was more like a bluegrass or country-music 4/4 type accompaniment. I cannot for the life of me recall the artist's name - I think he had a Jewish surname. Any help would be appreciated. By the way, I'm putting together a program of American folk songs for children - this thread has been very helpful so far! :) |
