Angie only gets to sing this song once or twice a year and it still holds true even though "it was translated using failed O level Latin" about 10 or more years ago,as she says when she introduces it.

Writing poetry can be a curious business; sometimes poems have to be struggled over for days, week or months whilst, at other times, they arrive unannounced. I met this poem on a late afternoon walk near my village of Wressle, as I was gazing at the sun setting behind an unassuming copse of trees. There's a poignant backstory about this particular stand of trees: it was on this spot that, during WW ll, a Royal Canadian Air Force bomber, limping back from a night raid, failed to make the last few miles to safety at (I think) Wombleton and crashed, killing all the crew. Hidden away amongst the trees is a simple memorial to these men, erected by the owners of the land, Elizabeth and Colin Shutt.

I would have left a comment on your blog, a gentle caveat about scansion, but it demanded that I type the two words in the box- in which only one word was displayed.

Bloody briars- still got the stigmata from a fortnight ago. Laxton is a place I've never been to, though I know it from the misrepresentation in half-a-dozen archaeology textbooks that insist it's in Northamptonshire. The contrast with the physical and social devastation of the deep-mining districts a few miles north and west is astounding, though, if Google Maps is at all credible.

Thanks folks. CS, I've walked part of the Peddar's Way although it was some time ago. H V Morton has a nice chapter on it in 'In Search of England' - not sure which one it is as I haven't got my copy handy but it begins 'The silence of death lies on the Peddar's Way'.

Charming Leveller!

When walking the Peddars way (old Roman track, straight as a die, bisecting the county of Norfolk from South to North) we encountered erected stones (modern) with poetry on. The last of which may be seen here:

Walking an ancient track really can be quite a profound experience, to think of the footfalls long gone.. I also find old decommissioned railway tracks have a potency to them too.
