Subject: BS: if you love birds From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 05 Dec 12 - 10:36 AM I'm a dedicated bird watcher, and so is my husband. We have enjoyed many wonderful trips based on birds. Yesterday we visited the site of the Cornell Ornithology Lab and saw that an unknown donor is matching donations, dollar for dollar. So we made a donation. What pleasure it is to know that we are helping rhe birds and also sucking money right out of the pockets of some fat cat! So I respectfully suggest it as a good place for one's own Christmas giving and Christmas presents on someone's behalf. Give me a sec and I'll make a link. |

If that's the sort of respect you give to someone who is matching donations dollar for dollar, then I'll pass thank you. DC |
Subject: RE: BS: if you love birds From: Jack the Sailor Date: 05 Dec 12 - 04:40 PM Is "matching donations" a scam? The donor will donate or not. Making the donations contingent on yours seems like a ploy. I donate when the cause in worthy so presumably, does "the fat cat." |
Subject: RE: BS: if you love birds From: Little Hawk Date: 05 Dec 12 - 08:06 PM The fat cat is the one who gets the bird. |
Subject: RE: BS: if you love birds From: gnu Date: 06 Dec 12 - 04:57 AM I am not a fat cat but I get the bird all the time. |
Subject: RE: BS: if you love birds From: GUEST,Big Al Whittle Date: 06 Dec 12 - 06:25 AM ye-es.......bird and birds have a myriad meanings in spoken English (as spoken on the English mainland), Leenia....your title is pregnant with possibilities. Well done gnu! I'd forgotten that one! |

Subject: RE: BS: if you love birds From: kendall Date: 06 Dec 12 - 08:43 PM The Black cap Chickadee is Maine's state bird. I feed them all fall, winter and well into the spring. I love it when they get impatient and come to the feeder before I finish filling it. Sometimes they land on my fingers. They are surprisingly strong in their feet. We also get Downy Woodpeckers, Piliated Woodpeckers,Cardinals, Sparrows, Nuthatches, Yellow Finches, Purple Finches, Mourning Doves and Turkeys. They always disappear around Thanksgiving. NO! I would never kill one. |
Subject: RE: BS: if you love birds From: Bobert Date: 06 Dec 12 - 08:53 PM We've been birders going back for ever... We have feeders and houses and try to create environments where they are happy... We loves all them feathered creatures... b~ |
Subject: RE: BS: if you love birds From: Ron Davies Date: 07 Dec 12 - 11:18 AM The degree of cynicism around here is striking, to say the least. I agree, Leeneia; I think the Cornell Lab is a worthwhile group. I give to them. I think it's interesting that ranges are definitely changing, evidently due to global warming. We used to get black-capped chickadees and both white-breasted and red-breasted nuthatches; now we get only Carolina chickadees and white-breasted nuthatches. And we also have some hardy robins and mockingbirds who don't fly south at all. That's new, too--admittedly I've been in this area for a while. |
Subject: RE: BS: if you love birds From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 07 Dec 12 - 06:59 PM According to my Peterson's, mockingbirds don't migrate. but I know what you mean about warming. Kendall and Bobert, it's nice to know you're into birds too. |
Subject: RE: BS: if you love birds From: Ron Davies Date: 08 Dec 12 - 12:09 AM I think I read that some robins and some mockingbirds migrate, some don't. Virtually a sub-species. |

Subject: RE: BS: if you love birds From: Henry Krinkle Date: 08 Dec 12 - 09:15 AM I've had feeders. Destroyed by squirrels. They attract rats, too. I like birdwatching. I don't have a good window here. One day I'll take it up again. I need some good binoculars. I have a book. =(:-( )) |
Subject: RE: BS: if you love birds From: Henry Krinkle Date: 08 Dec 12 - 09:51 AM 4 cats here. I shouldn't attract them here, anyway. =(:-( )) |
Subject: RE: BS: if you love birds From: kendall Date: 08 Dec 12 - 10:23 AM I have a shot gun. No Rats here. |
