There is also additional information /perspectives on this site, if you fish around- Including this one, titled "Are women leaders less corrupt? No, but they shake things up"

Impacts of female leaders

NZ first equal! Hmmm!

Our problem here isn't corruption, it's sheer official incompetence, compounded by the ruling National Party's devotion to laissez-faire economics and the power of the "free" (yeah, right!) market.

But interesting to note that there seems to be a pretty good inverse correlation between a country's performance through the recent worldwide economic turbulence and its perceived level of official corruption. I mean, the less corruption, the better they do...

Discuss, please!

Note that the report was about how various countries are perceived.

Canada, for instance, is in the top 10 [i.e., least corrupt] in public perception. In recent weeks, at least five Canadian city mayors have resigned or been convicted . . . perhaps fraudsters here are more sophisticated?
ennyway . . .yeah, fossil, there's certainly lots of grist for BS mill here below the line.

keep on pickin'

The Montreal, Laval and Mascouche mayors resigned. I wasn't aware of the other two, DrWord.

Sorry about the way that sounds. I don't doubt it.

Our perceptions of what constitutes corruption is quite different in Quebec. A five thousand dollar hunting trip with expenses paid is seen as a normal way of doing business. There are receipts connected with that--and certain tax benefits to the folks who pay the bill to attract business. Envelopes with $100,000 cash in them are perceived to be a slightly different story.

At the very bottom of the list: Afghanistan.

18th from the bottom (out of 174 nations): Iraq.

Isn't it wonderful what the War on Terror has accomplished in terms of nation-building?

Yeah. However, between 1999 and 2002 there were 1.8 billion in kickbacks to Hussein's government in the oil for food fiasco. That figure is from the same site that did the stats/perceptions in in 2012.

If you asked

- which country paid the most bribes
- in which country bribes paid had the largest return on investment

it's pretty obvious who would be #1 for both.

Yes to that, Jack. I have another: Mirabel Airport. Perhaps you recall a time when Bourassa was Premiere in Quebec. He was married to a gal in the Simard family. Guess who has a big hand in the Quebec cement business--and I don't mean Jimmy Hoffa?
