Thanks to the wonderful generosity of a keen folk song enthusiast many a treasure trove of tape recordings (on reel-reel) from the 1960s have been released into the public domain.

The lastest is a series of 4 x 15 min programmes of traditional singer Sam Larner from East Anglia.

They are available for free downloading at:

You might need to allow cookies from mediafire.com. It hung until I did.

It told me my browser was 'outdated' (late version of Opera!) and never even asked me if I WOULD accept cookies. Other sites make their rules clearer and manage to cope with ALL decent browsers.

Thanks for pointing that one out. An awful lot of Philip Donnelan's recordings of Sam will have been made available elsewhere at some time or other; EG the Topic LP Garland For Sam. Even so, it's nice that people who are unfamiliar with the name have now got a chance of catching up with him.

Downloaded with no problem and transferred to mp3 player. Will listen on way home.
Many thanks for this.

I've listened to all the programmes and they are wonderful. My only complaint is that they re far too short and that Sam's version of Maid Of Australia is cut -- probably too risque for the BBC back then.
It's tempting too laugh at the stilted BBC delivery of the announcer but by the Lord Harry he knew a good song and a good singer when he heard them and he deserves all our thanks for preserving Sam Larner for us.
Just this little bit makes me understand why Martin Carthy was blown away by Sam all those years back and makes me wish I'd seen him perform.

"probably too risque for the BBC back then."
To be fair to the Beeb - these programmes were made for school broadcasting
Nice to see them available to all
My download came in a form that I couldn't play; doesn't matter too much - I already had them.

Jim - why didn't the download(s) play? Funny that you already had the recordings. Maybe there's a coincidence there!!

Just retried a third download and it works perfectly.
Was given copies of the progs. by Charles Parker back in the 70s.

While I'm at it - I have three poorly recorded radio programmes by Charles Parker, as follows
Songs of the Frontier, Flash Lads and Hard Cases and Fire in the Middle.
Wonder if anybody can date them, or if they know were there any more to the series (I seem to remember they were a series)

If they were broadcast it would be just the thing the new BBC Radio Times digital archive could solve. Sadly, according to the articles in the thread it won't before 2013 (if at all) that it will be publicly available. But if you know someone at the BBC they might be able to get the info.

Any chance Jim of digitising these programmes and making them available?

BTW
Thanks Mick, but in the past I have found that the Beeb won't let you download in Ireland - have always got the "not available in in your area" message.
Doesn't matter anyway - have found a fourth programme "To Make a Fisherman" - Devoted to Sam Larner, and they weren't as bad quality as I'd remembered
Will sort something out....

To listen or download anything on the Beeb iPlayer overseas in Ireland and the USA etc. you need ExpatShield (or equivalent) - this fools the Beeb server(s) into thinking that you are in the UK. It assigns a UK IP address to your computer.

Then you can use get_iplayer to download Beeb video and audio progs, and RadioDwnloader to download Beeb radio progs.

RadioDownloader also handles podcasts for all sources (you don't need ExpatSheild for these). I use RD to download podcats from the NZBC, fRoots, etc.

Files shared in Mediafire should be available to anyone anyway. Its download functions are a bit clunky, and you need to accept its cookies. Its interface is based on Flash Player so you need the latest version from Adobe.

Its worth seeing what is on RadioArchive.cc - membership is free.
