Can anyone help me with the chords and lyrics to Dundee singer Sheena Wellington's "Newport Braes"?

She wrote it and recorded it on "Kerelaw" an album released in the mid '80's.

Mudcat Cafe is the coolest site ever! Long may you run.

Neville

Neville, it may take a few days, but don't give up.

Do you have somewhere people could hear the song?
Do you have any of the lyrics?

I have the tape somewhere, will try to find it.
Or you could try the lady herself for the lyrics, via her website. She sometimes posts on Mudcat under a pseudonym.
Her usual accompanist is guitarist Ewen Sutherland who would know about the chords.

Found the tape. What a great album!
It was produced by Dougie Maclean who plays guitar on this recording.

From the sleeve notes re Newport Braes:
The old Tay ferries took generations of Dundee bairns to picnic in Fife. There was always music: moothies, melodeons and often " The Sallies" and their band.
(Translation - moothies = harmonicas, Sallies = Salvation Army)

Lyrics will take a bit longer!

Not much longer! From the wonderful Sheena herself who is very happy for me to post them here. You may wonder about how some of the words,
but that is how Sheena spells them and reflect the Dundee wey o' spekin'! It is a direct copy and paste, so don't start thinking any of it's wrong!
I'll have a further listen to my tape and see if I can work out some chords, but Dougie often plays in open tunings which I don't!

NEWPORT BRAES by Sheena Wellington

Lang years ago, when eh wis young, we never hid much money
But we were never shoart o fun when the summer days were sunny
Fir ma granny wid mak sandwiches we'd wear oor ahldest claes
An we'd go an catch the Fifie fir the bonnie Newport Braes

Chorus:
For the Broughty Beach wis sandy, an the Medlin Green wis near
But they never gave us half the thrull o queuing at the Fifie pier.

For the Fifies they were magic, always cheengin in oor sight
Jist depending on the picture we'd seen on Friday night
It wid be oor stately galleon or a warship sleek an grey
Or we'd fly the Jolly Roger a the wey across the Tay.

An when we got tae Newport, up the Boat Brae we wid run
Tae be first ane tae the Horseshoe wis a great pert o the fun
An we'd sweem an climb an play at tig while the big fowk biled up tea
An we'd gether pails o whulks an dulse tae eat back in Dundee.

But when the sun was settin ower Invergowrie Bay
It's 'The moarn's weary Monday an yer Da's tae earn his pay'
But if ye a behave yersels fir jist the next few days
We'll bring ye back next Sunday tae the bonnie Newport Braes

Well, the Fifies they are gone now, in their place a great bridge stands
An the Dundee bairns are scattered tae a hunder foreign lands
But the sweetest part o memory still hails the summer days
When happiness wis the BL Nairn an heaven wis the Newport Braes!

Seriously disappointed in Mudcatters; I had to wait 28 hours and 3 minutes to get the lyrics and you hand me off to another website for the chords?????!!!!!!

Really seriously, I am amazed that this great, but undeservedly obscure (at least in my neck of the woods), song was found so quickly.

Huge, huge THANK YOU!!! to you, Tattie Bogle. I am tremendously appreciative. I just checked in to see how my request was faring and
WOW, it's already posted.

I had a tape from the radio of it and fell in love with Sheena Wellington's voice, accent, and composing talent, but I couldn't make out all the words and place names. The tape was getting pretty worn-out already when I lost track of it.

I'm going to her website. If those folks are half as friendly as the 'fowks' at Mudcat I'll probably have the chords tomorrow. Or maybe they have the CD.

Thanks again, Tattie Bogle and to you too Guest 999.

Neville

AAARRGH! Why does the formatting all go awry when you post?
One more try, and if that doesn't work, PM me!

Well nearly, ecept that first C should be over the word "money"!
A over "summer" and D over "sunny", C over "near".
It's all perfectly aligned in my word doc from which I copied it!

I was very privileged to add a wee bit of flute to a track on "Kerelaw". I also did the sound for Sheena to sing at an afternoon concert at Dougie's "Perthshire Amber" festival a couple of months back, and am pleased to report that she's still in excellent voice, and a great entertainer.

Tattie Bogle - for formatting you can try enclosing your text in
and
tags (preformatted)

Alternatively, you can do what I usually do when posting chords with lyrics - put them in parentheses before the word rather than above it:

(G)Lang years...(C)money/(C)But we.. (G)shoart..(A)summer...

(In fact I usually set it up in a text file beforehand, then do a global change of ( to ( and ) to ) which makes the chords bold like this:

(G)Lang years...(C)money/(C)But we.. (G)shoart..(A)summer...)

Thanks Mick, I'll maybe take up your second suggestion in future as the first is a wee bit technical for me!
Kenny, I did notice your name in the credits on that tape: certainly heard flute in the Queen Jane track, and have heard you play in another band in recent times. And very nice too.

I have this on a vinyl single. Ally Bally played it a lot on Radio Tay at the time. Fantastic song.

I play this song regularly. It's so evocative of days gone by.I travelled on the Fifies as a bairn and remember them well. What a lovely voice. God bless Sheena for this.
