Subject: RE: Obit: Sir Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore From: theleveller Date: 09 Dec 12 - 10:09 AM I'm afraid I could never get past his bombastic, irascible personality and racist, ultra right-wing politics. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Sir Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore From: John MacKenzie Date: 09 Dec 12 - 10:13 AM Well, If when we die we go "upstairs", then he'll be right at home. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Sir Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore From: Steve Shaw Date: 09 Dec 12 - 10:16 AM He was the ultra-backwoodsman, there's no doubt about it. He got me interested in science when I was a little lad. His vile politics didn't come through on Sky At Night, I suppose. I can't stomach Wagner's music in my house because of his revolting politics. In his case, I always imagine I can pick something of it up, thought very hard to articulate, in his music. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Sir Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore From: Steve Shaw Date: 09 Dec 12 - 10:17 AM though, not thought. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Sir Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore From: John MacKenzie Date: 09 Dec 12 - 11:39 AM The programme's opening and closing theme music is "At the Castle Gate", from the incidental music to Pelléas et Mélisande by Jean Sibelius, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham. Lovely bit of music. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Sir Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore From: Pete Jennings Date: 09 Dec 12 - 12:00 PM BBC Obit for those who haven't heard of him. Politics aside, he made astronomy interesting, which is no mean feat. RIP. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Sir Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore From: GUEST,Musket sans cookie Date: 09 Dec 12 - 02:51 PM Spoke his mind and didn't suffer fools gladly. The trick in his astronomy was that the presenter understood the subject. Top man. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Sir Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore From: fat B****rd Date: 09 Dec 12 - 03:35 PM RIP Sir Patrick |
Subject: RE: Obit: Sir Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore From: Steve Shaw Date: 09 Dec 12 - 06:43 PM Sibelius is indeed wonderful, John. I've always found his music to be a bit dour and impenetrable, but a recent natter with a mate of mine who really understands music convinced me that I was completely wrong. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Sir Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore From: GUEST,Doc John Date: 10 Dec 12 - 03:19 AM A first class communicator with a wide and deep knowledge of his subject. Such people are becoming rarer in these days of in your face shallow celebs. He will be greatly missed. |
