Subject: RE: Lord Bateman inspired Radio 4 From: GUEST,Guest - Jim Younger Date: 08 Feb 13 - 11:27 AM Tim Van Eyken did a great job on the music, and it was a bold and original work altogether. Lord Bateman, the ballad, is perennial. One of the finest versions was Nic Jones's. |
Subject: RE: Lord Bateman inspired Radio 4 From: Desert Dancer Date: 07 Feb 13 - 01:27 PM Via Tim on Facebook: You can still hear the music for the BBC R4 play I made here, it's a bit weird out of the context of the play, but for those who have been asking about it, here it is: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01p7ddf It's a 14+ minute track. Works for me. :-) ~ Becky in Tucson |

Subject: RE: Lord Bateman inspired Radio 4 From: Mary Humphreys Date: 15 Dec 12 - 12:55 PM I loved it too, in spite of knowing versions collected by Percy Grainger and knowing what the ending would be. I hope that TvE does more of this sort of collaboration. Highly recommended! |
Subject: RE: Lord Bateman inspired Radio 4 From: GUEST,Shirley Dixon Date: 15 Dec 12 - 12:21 PM I've just listened to it on i-player, and thought it superb. Why would 'the average Radio 4 listener' not like something that intertwines so much of contemporary concerns with glimpses of something they may not have encountered before (i.e. traditional song), and does it so grippingly? |
Subject: RE: Lord Bateman inspired Radio 4 From: John MacKenzie Date: 13 Dec 12 - 04:23 PM not the platform |
Subject: RE: Lord Bateman inspired Radio 4 From: John MacKenzie Date: 13 Dec 12 - 02:07 PM Thought it was rubbish meself. It might appeal to a TvE fan, or a traditional folkie, but I would have thought that to the average Radio 4 listener, it was a lost cause. Don't get me wrong, I like traditional music, but a Radio 4 drama's the platform. |

Subject: Lord Bateman inspired Radio 4 play From: GUEST,Derek Schofield Date: 12 Dec 12 - 05:52 PM BBC Radio 4 Afternoon Drama tomorrow (Dec 13th) at 2.15pm is 'The Loving Ballad of Captain Bateman', a play by the writer Joseph Wilde and musician Tim van Eyken, and directed by Julian May. It is a new departure for all three – Joe and Tim's first piece for radio, and Tim usually makes documentaries and features. It is inspired by a very old song, The Ballad of Lord Bateman, but is absolutely contemporary. Here's a link www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01p7ddf And here's another to a piece Julian wrote about it for the Radio 4 Blog http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/radio4/posts/The-Loving-Ballad-of-Captain-Bateman-How-an-Old-Folk-Song-Became-a-Modern-Radio-Drama (This was briefly featured in the current issue of English Dance & Song).
