I'll just type for him - Spaw ###################### ##################### Dear New Little Sis, I'm so happy you've arrived at Mario's house! Our birthmom, Barbara Blessings< sure does know how to pack doesn't she. I want to tell you how glad I am that you've gone to live with Mario. I tried to get Catspaw to have you come here and live, but he said that we're so special, someone else deserved to have you. Anyhow, I know you'll like Mario!! I can't wait to hear what name you'll have. You know that it was 2 Mudcatters together that named me. El Swanno and Seed together came up with the final name and I'm very happy with it! As a matter of fact, I just met El Swanno yesterday!!! He was here from California (thread says "El Swanno and Spaw rescued by Cleigh") and Catspaw took me to meet him. I got to ride on an ambulance!!! I'll have Spaw send a picture to you!!! Catspaw takes lots of pictures of me. I have my very own album. Also there is a picture page which Miss bbc gave me. I'll share with you sis! I hope we can get together very soon!!! Now THAT would be quite a picture. All my Love, Cleigh ######################## ####################### Well there you go Mario...I'll get that e-mail off and maybe Swanno and Seed will strike again.......Or maybe another 'Catter..... COME ON FOLKS...LET'S FIND A NAME FOR CLEIGH'S LITTLE SIS!!!! Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: 'Possum arrives, safe and sound! From: Dave Swan Date: 31 Oct 99 - 02:06 PM MMario- PJ here, Dave's on the road and I'm seeking solace in the company of 'Catters. Catspaw instructed me to check in on this thread and help if I could. He's trying to keep me entertained until Governor Gorrillasuit gets back. No small task. Congratulations on your new arrival! As a wildlife professional, please allow me to offer some information on earthnware opposom phisiology which you may find useful. The earthenware subspecies (Didelphus terra cotta) is known as a shy, nocturnal creature with few natural defenses. When threatened by being picked up and lifted to the mouth of a potential predator (such as a musician) it tends to assume a stiff posture, almost like a solid piece of clay pottery, and to emit a foul smelling odor from every pore... particularly if the musician had garlic for dinner. Although they have no larynx, they are capable of a wide range of vocalizations when someone is blowing up their tail. (Aren't we all.) It is a fallicy that opossums hang by their tail. By the time they reach sexual maturity they are too heavy to hang from their tail, and must from then on hang from someone else's tail. Their tail does, however, help to hold them in place by grasping tree branches, fence rails, or noses of musicians attempting to become overly familiar. This is because the opossum tail is prehensile, a trait shared in the animal kingdom by primate hands, giraffe tongues and dolphin penises. It was once my duty to explain the prehensile properties of a dolphin penis to a grad student sitting tankside at a dolphin communication research facility where I worked. After learning this thought provoking point of natural history, she stared wistfully at the smiling male dolphin I was feeding and commented "I don't know whether to puke or propose..." But I digress. As marsupials, female opossums are equipped with a pouch for carrying young. After a brief gestation period, the coffee-bean sized young emerge from the birth canal and make their way, blind and helpless, to the safety of the pouch. There the immature animals attach themselves to a mammary gland for as long possible. This is not to be confused with opossum players, who are equipped with a pocket for carrying beer money. After a brief libation period, musicians tend to emerge from pubs to make their way, blind and helpless, to the safety of their bedroom at home to do, well, pretty much the same thing. In closing I would like to point out that opossums play an important role in the environment (Hamlet). They are wild animals and deserve to be treated with all the respect and dignity which can be accorded to a cross-eyed animal who eats snails and walks like a broken tricycle. No, we're not talking about Coco Chanel, we're talking about opossums. Pay attention. On the subject of an appropriate name for your new roommate, you may consider the fact that young opossums, even the earthenware subspecies, are called kits. Is your little girl is too old to qualify for the name Eartha Kit? All best, PJ |

I love Eartha Kit...but since we're here at the 'Cat maybe MudKit would work too. Now Cleigh is a friendly little guy and if you look REAL close at the picture with the Squad wheel in it, you'll notice he's sitting on the rim of the wheel itself....marking it perhaps? And ... Doesn't a possum have an ospenis(sp). I have a funny story of a college friend that I shared once here somewhere or another. SO *** SO FAR THE NAMES ARE:

And Pam, even though I'm getting to know a few people at the Plow, It's lonesome there without El Swanno and La Swanna. You guys have missed my last four songs--the first, "Abilene," came after you had to go home. Then I did "The Hermit," learned from an Oscar Brand "Bawdy Songs and Backroom Ballads" album, "The Wild West Show"--an abbreviated version (I learned this one from a girl at Timberline Lodge a few decades ago), and "Missus McGrath," at last an Irish song. Subject: RE: BS: 'Possum arrives, safe and sound! From: Dave Swan Date: 31 Oct 99 - 06:50 PM Seed o' my heart!! So good to hear from you. I'm so very sorry to have missed your last few at the Plough, I'll be there tonight to hear you for sure. I've changed jobs in the last couple of weeks, and am now convinced I should have stayed in middle management where I belong. New hours and out-of-town conferences have conspired to cut into my session time, but I think I'm getting back on track now. I'm working on "Copper Ore" (stolen from Salt Of The Earth who performed at the Castle Folk club last month) and hope to have it ready for the Starry Plough soon. Dave should be back late this week, unless Catspaw and Cleigh have hijacked him permanently. We'll get together for a pint and some music soon as he gets home. Maybe a session at Casa Swan? By the way, I really like La Swanna, sounds a little like I should be peeping out from a jungle thicket wearing a pith helmit. Hope it catches on. xoxo PJ |

Subject: RE: BS: 'Possum arrives, safe and sound! From: Dave Swan Date: 31 Oct 99 - 08:28 PM Dearest PatSpaw "The Wind that Shakes the Barley" is one of my favorites, too. The best recording I've ever heard is the arrangement done by Solas. I'm a little uncomfortable doing politically charged tunes in public, so I found the original version in DigTrad and tried to learn it. It's nice, but I have to admit I was drawn back to the more popular one. Same thing happened with "The Foggy Dew", another favorite of mine. As for "The White Cockade", I believe you can find it in the pharmaceutical cosmetics aisle, for gentlemen suffering from vitiligo. It was approved for over-the-counter sales not long ago, and is now popular among first time visitors to nudist colonies as a self-tanning product. I wasn't aware that someone had written a song about it, (I have a feeling someone may be writing one right now as he reads this) but I'd be pleased to learn it if you'll be so kind as to teach me. Many kisses on your side of the computer picture... La Swanna |

The Irish Wolfhound: Hairy and kinda goofy looking, but a loyal companion. The Deaf Dalmatian: No matter what you say, it won't come when you talk to it. The Rottweiler: So large it scares most women, guys who have one love to show it off, usually more trouble than it's worth. The Terrier: Highly active, difficult to keep it out of things. The Greyhound: Incredibly fast, yet never manages to catch the rabbit before the race is over. The Bedlington: Oddly shaped with a pointy snout. The Bloodhound: Known far and wide for its ability to smell. The Boxer: (nevermind, it's too raunchy even for this thread) *giggle giggle* LaSwanna

We actually DO HAVE a Cornish Rex.......He's not playing with a full deck, several screws are not just loose, but missing entirely. Subject: RE: BS: 'Possum arrives, safe and sound! From: Micca Date: 01 Nov 99 - 05:07 PM How does one go about acquiring one of these Possums? I do not play the Ocarina, my music playing ability is confined to the CD player but aesthetically they look interesting and fun. I am alredy a bit soppy about racoons (another species we do not get here in the UK), but I have seen in the wild as my in-laws live in Toronto, BTW I was at Mariposa a few years ago and may have heard Rick play!! Subject: RE: BS: 'Possum arrives, safe and sound! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 02 Nov 99 - 12:20 PM Well if it's cats we're going to do now..... I guess no one wants a siamese? Sleek and showy, but demanding and very noisy. Or a Persian, stuck up and prone to tangles.... I was going to mention the Cornish Rex too, but could think of nothing to say about a cat that appears to have gone through a washing machine on cotton, when it should have been in the wool cycle. Guess which side of the fence I sit!!! There's the traditional old fashioned moggy - always on the wrong side of the door, never gets stroked enough, warm and friendly to those that hate them (the amount of gay guys I've fallen for over the years......!) and dribbles when you tickle it's nose. Liz the Squeak.

Subject: RE: BS: 'Possum arrives, safe and sound! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 03 Nov 99 - 08:31 PM For those of you who don't know, the full list is: There was Dido, Fido, Bonzo and Rex, Rover and Lassie and Spot. There was Butch, there was Candy, there was Patch and there was Sandy, these were the dogs what I had got. From a song by the Kipper family, another parody (hey, can we tie these threads together here??) that incidentaly parodied the children's popular programme 'Blue Peter', a middle class sort of show; that because it was on the BBC (no advertising) had to make everything out of washing up liquid bottles, sticky backed plastic and sticky tape, rather that what we could all see carefully obscured by white tape; Fairy liquid bottles, Fablon and selotape! Anyway, this programme had a famous pet Alsatian (German Shepherd) called Petra, who had lots of puppies, not actually on air, this is the BBC you know, but they were called...... Butch, Candy, Patch, Sandy, Rover and Rex. Patch got to stay on the programme for another 700 years, and Petra is hero worshiped by legion loyal fans, who leave doggy toys on the bronze of her head that adorns the Blue Peter garden. Nice.
