I realise that many folks no longer listen to CDs, but since we have some CDs to sell at shows, I was wondering what is a fair price for a CD being sold off the stage or in the lobby at a show.

I'm not happy to pay over $12 USD for a CD, even though it may be brand new and recent vintage.

I thank an artist should sign it free with a reasonable smile included should he/she be asked.

different countries have different prices.

Here in Australia CDs are generally $20 to $25 with a dollar or two added if they are sold in the shop @ a Festival.

Hot off the press: $20
Still warm: $15
Cold: $10

Those prices work in the US and Canada. I don't know about other places.

Good music has an infinite shelf life.

True, but that's got nothing to do with CD sales from the stage, PDQ.

Can vary here in the Uk but generally for CD's sold in the Folk Clubs £5 seems to be an average price, up to about £10 for the more professional acts

CD or CDR?

For a studio recorded CD (not CDR) I would expect GBP10 to 12 these days.

Hi,

Kendall, I warned you to make sure the P&P would be covered! (Still, could have been worse, could have been a thousand-page book.)

In my experience, CD prices at clubs/festivals are mostly a matter of round figures. €10 would be acceptable at the moment. In the UK, I'd expect £10; in the USA $10 might no longer be quite enough.

Bye,

Picky point here. There are two kinds of studio-produced then manufactured CDs. One is duplicated and the other is replicated. Replication which requires a glass master is more expensive. However, since CD sales are in the toilet, it doesn't really mean much anymore anyway.

Desi C must be lucky because my experience is that £10 is more typical in a UK folk club.

Most of the people who perform at our concert series in Richmond, Virginia seem to charge $15.00 - rarely less.

Most local band CDs in my area are in the $10-$15 range. My band bases our CDprice on two things: number of tracks on the disc, and how much $$$ we sank into studio fees. We did two live studio shows (in-house audience with tickets pre-sold) that resulted in two one-hour live recordings of about 16 songs each. A friend chopped the loooong recording down into individual song tracks and equalized the volume as a favor. I design all our graphics and manufacture the finished CD at home, complete with printed disc so they look really good. Since we had next to no investment in these recordings, we charge $10 for them.

But we did a studio-recorded 20-song CD last year that we sank some bucks into, so it goes for $15 and is a really good deal. We've gotten great feedback from that disc. Nobody griped about the price. Other smaller projects from the band and solo projects of 10-12 tracks are moving nicely at $10.

These are all USD prices. We are an Ohio-based old-time bluegrass band.

As Guest Wolf suggests, it should be a multiple of the cost of production. If you are selling a product, you should be entitled to make a profit from it unless you strictly doing a vanity project or putting it out for publicity purposes.
