Subject: $ for a CD (How much should it cost?) From: PHJim Date: 14 Dec 12 - 07:36 PM I realise that many folks no longer listen to CDs, but since we have some CDs to sell at shows, I was wondering what is a fair price for a CD being sold off the stage or in the lobby at a show. |
Subject: RE: $ for a CD (How much should it cost?) From: pdq Date: 14 Dec 12 - 07:44 PM I'm not happy to pay over $12 USD for a CD, even though it may be brand new and recent vintage. I thank an artist should sign it free with a reasonable smile included should he/she be asked. |
Subject: RE: $ for a CD (How much should it cost?) From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 14 Dec 12 - 07:45 PM different countries have different prices. Here in Australia CDs are generally $20 to $25 with a dollar or two added if they are sold in the shop @ a Festival. |

Subject: RE: $ for a CD (How much should it cost?) From: GUEST,999 Date: 14 Dec 12 - 09:01 PM True, but that's got nothing to do with CD sales from the stage, PDQ. |
Subject: RE: $ for a CD (How much should it cost?) From: Bobert Date: 14 Dec 12 - 09:06 PM I sell mine for $10 at shows... B~ |

Subject: RE: $ for a CD (How much should it cost?) From: GUEST,Desi C Date: 15 Dec 12 - 07:11 AM Can vary here in the Uk but generally for CD's sold in the Folk Clubs £5 seems to be an average price, up to about £10 for the more professional acts |
Subject: RE: $ for a CD (How much should it cost?) From: GUEST,Peter Date: 15 Dec 12 - 08:43 AM but generally for CD's sold in the Folk Clubs £5 seems to be an average price CD or CDR? For a studio recorded CD (not CDR) I would expect GBP10 to 12 these days. |
Subject: RE: $ for a CD (How much should it cost?) From: Mysha Date: 15 Dec 12 - 08:56 AM Hi, Kendall, I warned you to make sure the P&P would be covered! (Still, could have been worse, could have been a thousand-page book.) In my experience, CD prices at clubs/festivals are mostly a matter of round figures. €10 would be acceptable at the moment. In the UK, I'd expect £10; in the USA $10 might no longer be quite enough. Bye, Mysha |
Subject: RE: $ for a CD (How much should it cost?) From: GUEST,999 Date: 15 Dec 12 - 08:58 AM Picky point here. There are two kinds of studio-produced then manufactured CDs. One is duplicated and the other is replicated. Replication which requires a glass master is more expensive. However, since CD sales are in the toilet, it doesn't really mean much anymore anyway. |
Subject: RE: $ for a CD (How much should it cost?) From: Tootler Date: 15 Dec 12 - 10:27 AM Desi C must be lucky because my experience is that £10 is more typical in a UK folk club. |
Subject: RE: $ for a CD (How much should it cost?) From: Maryrrf Date: 15 Dec 12 - 12:09 PM Most of the people who perform at our concert series in Richmond, Virginia seem to charge $15.00 - rarely less. |
Subject: RE: $ for a CD (How much should it cost?) From: GUEST Date: 15 Dec 12 - 12:23 PM Most local band CDs in my area are in the $10-$15 range. My band bases our CDprice on two things: number of tracks on the disc, and how much $$$ we sank into studio fees. We did two live studio shows (in-house audience with tickets pre-sold) that resulted in two one-hour live recordings of about 16 songs each. A friend chopped the loooong recording down into individual song tracks and equalized the volume as a favor. I design all our graphics and manufacture the finished CD at home, complete with printed disc so they look really good. Since we had next to no investment in these recordings, we charge $10 for them. But we did a studio-recorded 20-song CD last year that we sank some bucks into, so it goes for $15 and is a really good deal. We've gotten great feedback from that disc. Nobody griped about the price. Other smaller projects from the band and solo projects of 10-12 tracks are moving nicely at $10. These are all USD prices. We are an Ohio-based old-time bluegrass band. http://www.secondwindgrass.com Wolf |
Subject: RE: $ for a CD (How much should it cost?) From: EBarnacle Date: 15 Dec 12 - 01:04 PM As Guest Wolf suggests, it should be a multiple of the cost of production. If you are selling a product, you should be entitled to make a profit from it unless you strictly doing a vanity project or putting it out for publicity purposes. |
