I watched a very short clip of this on the morning news. I was shaken by it. Now I got to hear all of it. I'm lost for words. Thank you for Peter. i also don't understand what was being said. But music is truly a universal language.

Rabbi Praver lives in Newtown, CT.

His prayer was stunning. I don't know that most of us have voices that truly express what we feel. I can't imagine anyone could have done better, and although I didn't understand his words, I had tears in my eyes. I do wish there were a better recording of it, but that, after all, wasn't the purpose.

Charlie, I assumed Praver was local to Newtown, but maybe was called in for the occasion? I'm just wondering whether it's normal for Jewish communities to have musicians of that calibre on tap.

Rabbi Praver is chanting "El Molei Rachamim" (G-d, full of mercy), the traditional Jewish memorial prayer for the departed. He has personalized it here, reciting it in the plural for multiple souls, the departed of the school in Newtown. (You may be able to hear "Newtown" in the midst of the Hebrew words if you listen closely.)

Rabbi Praver also plays fiddle/violin and guitar, and did so last Thursday at a community Hanukkah candle-lighting ceremony in the neighboring town of Monroe, Conn. http://www.acorn-online.com/joomla15/monroecourier/news/localnews/134790-monroes

I remember performing in that auditorium at Newtown High School in happier times, back when the NOMAD Festival took over the Newtown High School in the 1990s.

Haunting. I have no words.

Here's the link. A beautiful, heartfelt song of prayer, well worth the listen:

I don't go along with his religion - or anyone's - but in all the circs that was an extraordinary contribution by Rabbi Praver at the memorial service. I don't know what his praying is like, but the guy can sing.
