For some reason, I thought this might be of interest today. Skeeter Davis sings it...

It's arguably folk, you'll know why if you recognize the man at the beginning..

The End of the World

Music by Arthur Kent
Lyrics Sylvia Dee

Why does the sun go on shining
Why does the sea rush to shore
Don't they know it's the end of the world
'Cause you don't love me any more

Why do the birds go on singing
Why do the stars glow above
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when I lost your love

I wake up in the morning and I wonder
Why everything's the same as it was
I can't understand, no, I can't understand
How life goes on the way it does

Why does my heart go on beating
Why do these eyes of mine cry
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when you said goodbye

Why does my heart go on beating
Why do these eyes of mine cry
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when you said goodbye

Ah Skeeter Davis... Mmm...

Actually, the end of the world came to Sussex this evening (just after I'd left the pub after a 65th birthday bash). I'm now sitting on a small cloud in the Crab Nebula - and it feels great!

Very appropriate post, Guest Stim.

Something which may only be of significance to Scottish Catters is that yesterday it was announced that the man who had previously been acquitted of the World's End pub murders in Edinburgh in 1977 (Google) is going to be retried.

I saw that, Murray. It is a bit disturbing to see a fundamental protection of the law cast off to appeal to popular sentiment, particularly when the practical effect would be minimal, since Angus
Sinclair is, apparently, serving 2 life sentences for other crimes.

Our American system would regard Sinclair's acquittal as final, and even the Double Jeopardy Act wouldn't affect it, because Ex Post Facto laws are a not allowed in the U.S. Constitution.

In it's way, this is the other side of our current 2nd Ammendment/gun control issue, both provisions being intended to limit the power of of Government.

Not very scientifically accurate, but I've always liked this song from Carleton Place, Ontario's Brock Zeman. It doesn't seem to be on Youtube.

End of the World
Brock Zeman

It's the end of the world and it's just you and me
I know it might sound crazy but I always knew it would end up this way
The building's were collapsing and the sky was on fire
I said, "there's nothing to be afraid of" and you said, "You're a terrible liar."

You looked like an angel and I prayed you had wings
So I could hitch a ride on up to heaven and try to slip through them pearly gates
Because it's the end of the world and it's just you and me
Any second now that sun will come tumbling like a cannon ball and go out in the sea

You held my hand as the sky ripped in two
Before it all came crashing down you said, "I love you"
And I knew right then that these would be my last words
So I said, |"Kiss me quick baby, it's the end of the world.
Kiss me quick baby, it's the end of the world."

The rich were drinking martinis on a spaceship to the moon
While the poor pulled out their hair and wrung their hands and waited around for their doom
And God shook his head as his voice shook the sky
He said, "I told you once, it wasn't gonna be water, but fire next time"

The ground started trembling then everything went quiet
I saw that you were crying and so I pulled you in tight
I looked deep into your eyes as I leaned you back
Then I kissed you hard as everything went black

as we snow it.
Its The End of the World
as we slow wit.
Its The End of the World
as we blow it
Its The End of the World
as we burn it all to hell.

Extinction feasts are a sign of the end of the world.

Last year I joined the ultimate gourmet society in the world.
It is Extinction Feast DEinner club. Joining is a fee, the raffle is a fee and the winner pays handsomely for the feast.
You won't find it on the web because only endangered animals or plants aRE on the menu.
For an astonomical sum you can join a lottery to become the last person to eat the last animal (6 or less) of its kind.
there are conservation success stories like the wild turkey but the fact is certain species are at their end.
the cost to eat the last one of its kind is offset by the expensive conservation costs and search/hunt for rare bill of fare.
Some animals might be saved in our efforts to kill them.

World class chefs make as many dishes as possible and create a lavish feast for the piece d'resistance.

If you have to ask the price you can not afford it but some feasts are more expensive than others. The last white siberian tiger extinction feast raffle cost is one million dollars...but if you win, the feast is an undisclosed absolute fortune.

The winners thus far have stories to tell their whole life long of having the last of its kind (bird, porpose, cat, and even a tropical deer with what appears as gills on its neck). No one else will ever taste feel and smell such a creature ever again.

Aye but there's the rub.   Dodo DNA has been located and is being inserted into to chicken eggs without luck so far. Dodo lotteries have already begun. It is sort of the opposite of the extiction dinner club lotteries when you think about it.

mmm good mmm good my extinction feast is M M good.

Thank goodness this was in the music section. I hoped it might be Skeeter.

As I recall , her sister was killed in a car crash.    This might have influenced her wistful rendition.

Actually, Betty Jack Davis, who was killed in the car wreck with Skeeter was not related to her, even though they performed as The Davis Sisters". It was more confusing because after the accident, Betty Jack's sister Georgia worked with Skeeter. The accident was in 1953, and by 1963, Skeeter had gone on her own and had a string of hits, so the accident was long in the past.

I'd always thought that the song was about a broken romance, but it turns out that Sylvia Dee was thinking about the death of her father when she wrote it. it is one of the saddest songs ever.

♫"Til the end of the world rolls 'round I'll keep on loving you
As long as the sun goes up and comes down
And the big blue sky goes down to the ground
As long as the world goes round and round I'll keep on loving you

I tried to sail the sea of life I rowed my boat alone
Your love meant nothing to me dear my heart was made of stone
To a harbor filled with loneliness my little boat was moored
And on the day I first met you I fell right overboard

Whenever you're around me dear my heart just won't stand still
And when it comes to kissing you I'll never get my fill
They said I'd never settle down that I would always roam
That I could never be the type for a loving wife and home

So now I know the way I felt was only selfish pride
I thought my heart was fireproof but you burned your way inside
So tell me what I've got to do and tell me how it stands
The cards are on the table dear my life is in your hand."♫

Subject: Lyr Add: NOT THE END OF THE WORLD (Kate Earl)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 22 Dec 12 - 12:01 AM

I went looking for end-of-the-world songs on Spotify and found this one. I like it:

NOT THE END OF THE WORLD
Kate Earl, on "Stronger" (2012)

CHORUS: It's not the end of the world.
I don't love you any more.
There's other girls.
Pick your heart up off the floor.

Don't call my phone.
Don't leave a message at the tone.
Don't come by my home,
'Cause I might not be alone.
Don't send me gifts.
I don't want flowers.
Don't talk to my friends.
They're mine, not ours.
Don't give me nothin' but space.

CHORUS

Don't call my mom.
She never wanted you to be her son.
Don't come by my job.
I gave a photo of you to the security guard.
Don't buy me drinks.
Don't even go there.
What makes you think
That I still care?
You ain't nothin' that I can't replace.

CHORUS

CHORUS: It's not the end of the world.
I don't love you any more.
Don't make it worse.
Now I'm walkin' out the door.

Get over it, baby.

Great Atomic Power
by Ira Louvin, Charlie Louvin, Buddy Bain
Louvin Brothers, "Weapon of Prayer" 1962

Do you fear this man's invention that they call atomic power?
Are we all in great confusion? Do we know the time or hour?
When a terrible explosion may rain down upon our land
Leaving horrible destruction blotting out the works of man

There is one way to escape and be prepared to meet the Lord
Give your heart and soul to Jesus. He will be your shield and sword
He will surely stand beside and you'll never taste of death
For your soul will fly to safety and eternal peace and rest

There's an army who can conquer all the enemy's great band
It's a regiment of Christians guided by the Savior's hand
When the mushroom of destruction falls in all its fury great
God will surely save His children from that awful, awful fate

CHORUS:
Are you ready for that great atomic power?
Will you rise and meet your Savior in the end?
Will you shout or will you cry when the fire rains from on high?
Are you ready for that great atomic power?

I have always liked this poem:

The End of the World

Quite unexpectedly, as Vasserot
The armless ambidextrian was lighting
A match between his great and second toe,
And Ralph the lion was engaged in biting
The neck of Madame Sossman while the drum
Pointed, and Teeny was about to cough
In waltz-time swinging Jocko by the thumb
Quite unexpectedly the top blew off:

And there, there overhead, there, there hung over
Those thousands of white faces, those dazed eyes,
There in the starless dark, the poise, the hover,
There with vast wings across the cancelled skies,
There in the sudden blackness the black pall
Of nothing, nothing, nothing -- nothing at all.

Archibald MacLeish · 1892-1982

THE BIG NASTURTIUMS

All of a sudden the big nasturtiums

Rose in the night from the ocean's bed,

Rested a while in the light of the morning,

Turning the sand dunes tiger red.

They covered the statue of Abraham Lincoln,

They climbed to the top of our church's spire.

"Grandpa! Grandpa! Come to the window!

Come to the window! Our world's on fire!"

Big nasturtiums in the High Sierras,

Big nasturtiums in the lands below;

Our trains are late and our planes have fallen,

And out in the ocean the whistles blow.

Over the fields and over the forests,

Over the living and over the dead—

"I never expected the big nasturtiums

To come in my lifetime!" Grandpa said.

—Robert Beverly Hale

The Louvin Brothers certainly had different take on nuclear apocalypse than
Robert Beverly Hale! But MacLeish was the best, MtheGM. And, Jim Dixon, tell
Kate Earl that it's fine if she doesn't want to see me anymore, but I want the 2-5-1
chord progression back.
