Subject: Tune Req: By The Dog Dosing Strip at Dunsandel From: Jack Campin Date: 25 Dec 12 - 03:46 PM Anybody have a tune for this? I can't find it on YouTube. Background: hydatids in New Zealand Composer: Ken Avery Text: By the dog dosing strip at Dunsandel I fell in love with you |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: By The Dog Dosing Strip at Dunsandel From: Little Robyn Date: 25 Dec 12 - 11:34 PM I've been searching youtube for tracks by Gumboot Tango - Mike Harding sings it, but not on any that I can find. If no-one else has it we can probably figure it out in abc but that might take a bit more time. Robyn and Mitch |

He has quite a lot on youtube but unless it's hidden in a longer track, I haven't found The dog dosing strip. (We have driven past it tho'!) Robyn |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: By The Dog Dosing Strip at Dunsandel From: GUEST Date: 08 Aug 16 - 04:37 PM I remember this song, especially on Dog Dosing Day. When the weather was inclement the radio announcer John Craig would say "There will be no dog dosing today, all you dogs can go back to bed". Would love to hear the song again and am not sure who sang it. Lois Short |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: By The Dog Dosing Strip at Dunsandel From: Jack Campin Date: 09 Aug 16 - 12:26 PM My first link vanished. Google "hydatids nz". The disease (lethal to sheep and humans) is caused by a parasite that uses dogs as an essential part of its life cycle. It was eliminated by testing every dog in New Zealand at regular intervals - they were given a laxative/parasiticide and tied up at the testing strips (near every town) until they produced something that could be inspected. The point of the song is that it was the most unromantic place imaginable to meet the love of your life. We had classes about hydatids at primary school. Extremely graphic. I nearly fainted. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: By The Dog Dosing Strip at Dunsandel From: GUEST,Chris McIlraith Date: 04 Jul 17 - 10:53 PM I recall the tune from way back, but not sure that i could play it on any instrument. One singer was a guy who called himself Ash Burton. There use to be an actual dog dosing strip at Dunsandel. It was located to the south of the town on a strip of grass between SH1 and the railway. I have never seen it in operation, but it was clearly marked as a dog dosing strip. This was in the late 1950's, early 1960's. Hydatids has fortunately been eliminated and dog dosing strips long gone. |
