Subject: Origins: The Sergeant-major From: CET Date: 28 Dec 12 - 11:51 AM My sister was asking me about a song she heard in May of this year while on holiday in Essex. Apparently there were plenty of impromptu sessions in the pubs, and one song she heard more than once had an Army theme and the title was something like "The Sergeant-Major". She heard the song somewhere near Greater Waltham. It occurred to me that people who sing songs in pubs in that area might have connections to Mudcat, so I thought I would see if anyone knew the song and could supply the lyrics or tune. |

He called me dear, he called me pet; He called me lots of things I'd really rather forget... I've the words (rendered fit for for publication)& music to that somewhere, if that's the one you're looking for. |
Subject: RE: Origins: The Sergeant-major From: CET Date: 28 Dec 12 - 01:59 PM Thanks, I would like to get that song, although it isn't the one I was looking for. It turns out that the mystery song was no mystery after all. My sister was quoting what she could remember of the song, and I realized that what she heard in the pub was "has Anyone Seen the Colonel', which she had never heard before! I thought every one who speaks English knew that one. |
