Not having a TV, I do miss a some of the good stuff (as well as all the other kind)so I try to catch some of it on BBC iplayer.
One item I just watched was the Barbara Dickson documentary on BBC ALBA. Retracing her folk roots, I found very enjoyable.

Excellent documentary on a wonderful singer.

I was very slightly disappointed that they didn't include footage of her magical medley combining "In the Bleak Midwinter" with "Here Comes the Sun" from "John Paul Ringo George...and Bert" but a very very enjoyable production nonetheless.

Ms Dixon blotted her copybook as far as SOME Folkies are concerned by actually making a good living by NOT continuing to sing Traditional Folk songs .
Why oh WY do some of us decry any body 'Going Commercial' ?

She's good, she was there at the right time. None of us would refuse the chance, so why bitch?
I think she's great, and comes over as completely 'real'
First time I've seen Billy sing and play in a long time !

We saw her at The Carnegie Hall* a couple of years ago. Great songs and a fine performance.

Yes, a very good show. I saw her quite a fiew times many years ago, once in the folk club in the Covenanters Hotell in Newmilns Ayrshire, entrance fee was 25p, well worth it. Her version of "The Rigs O'Rye" near the end was a wee bit overblown though (one of the problems of "Going Commercial" you can forget the real feel for the songs )and what a horses neck B. Connolly is/has become. He's now the guy he built his act decrying and making a fool of.

I count myself lucky to have seen Barbara in the very early stages of her career, to have booked her at the Folk Union One in Hull, to have enjoyed her work as her reputation grew and to have delighted, mostly at a distance, at her great success on the stage, TV and film.

Lovely lady that she is, she was gracious enough to say hello at Mike Waterson's funeral. We had not met for well over 25 years.

Anyone who can feel bitchy about such a wonderful talent is a very sad person indeed.

Well said Sheila , and no one could decry her the success she has had.
In the early days she was alays welcome in the Middlesbrough / Redcar area (Teesside ) and she is undoubtably - the finest singer I have ever heard on many many occasions, and remember, I am talking about when Clubs had not got around to using PA systems.
At the same time you could also expexct to see at your local club another brilliant singer Maddy Prior (with Tim Hart), Christy Moore, Martin Carthy, Mike Harding ,The Watersons ,Tony Rose , Aly Bains with Mike Whellans, Martin W-Reed ,Tony Capstick the list is endless....add your own.
Oh happy days ! and back to the thread - Thanks Barbara - your contribution to my musical experience was tremendous.
