Date: 02 Jan 13 - 08:41 PM

Portland FolkMusic Society's annual music camp Singtime Frolics is now open for registration.

Registration is open until March 11, online or postmarked by that date.

The camp will be held at Camp Adams, near Mollala, Oregon (in the foothills of the Cascades southeast of Portland) on March 22-24, 2013.

Special guest artist Anne Weiss will be offering 2 workshops on Saturday and one on Sunday morning,   (See PFS flyer and website for details.)

Many other workshops will also be offered, as well as informal jam sessions and song circles.
Friday night begins with a potluck, followed by an all-camp get-acquainted song circle.
Saturday evening features an all-camp concert, with performances by anyone who wants to sign up.

Please help keep this thread on page 1 as much as possible, to let people know about the camp.

If you are interested in coming or even presenting a workshop, by all means let us know.

Here's a page for workshop proposals, along with some pics from previous years' workshops.

Here is a link to the current Facebook page for Singtime Frolics.    It has photos and other info from last year's camp, when Pint & Dale were our guest artists.

Feel free to use the Facebook page too.
So far, it seems the Singtime page at Facebook has to be a subgroup of my own page, since I'm the page administrator. We are hoping to be able to

If you have any photos from previous Singtime Frolics years, please contact me. Dick Hamlet is interested in collecting these for use in promo and publicity.

Singtime Frolics Workshops, Workshop Type Descriptions .

SHORT DESCRIPTIONS OF COMMON WORKSHOP TYPES
(C) Song circle. Take turns sharing (performing or leading) songs. Facilitator usually starts things off, then exerts minimal control.

(S) Sing-along. Group singing workshop (with or without instrumental backup).

(T) Taught. Leader teaches some information or techniques and/or songs, often with printed lyric/chord or informational sheets.

(I) Instructional. Demonstration & practice of vocal or instrumental technique, dance, songwriting, etc., with some ‘hands-on’ practice by participants.

(J)Jam session. Instrumental or instrumental with vocal. Unstructured, except tunes/songs chosen with an eye to the group playing/singing along.

(L)Lecture/demonstration. Lecture, forum, discussion, and/or demonstration but without active group participation in singing, dancing, or playing instruments.

(P) Performance. A mini-concert given by the presenter(s).

Note re the Workshop Description Codes:
A given workshop may share several of the descriptions. E.g.,   "T, S" would mean the presenter selects and/or teaches many of the songs and everyone is encouraged to sing on all of them.    "T, J," would be pretty much the same thing except everyone is encouraged to play their instruments on all songs. "I, S," would mean something was taught for the purpose of group singing (e.g., a harmony workshop).

Someone said Ann Weiss is a blues singer/musician. Is that right? Does she have any videos up? I'd like to find out more about her.
Blessings

Her style and voice on this song remind me a lot of Joni Mitchell Anne Weiss: "All I Want"

She is a very versatile musician, with songs in a number of 'genres' and sounds.

Here, along with Alice Stuart, she plays and sings Robert Johnson's "Love In Vain".

Anne Weiss with the Just Add Soul Gospel Choir, Mary Flower on lap steel, David Jacobs Strain on guitar, Donny Wright on bass, Spank Hopkins on drums, Scott Docherty on keyboards, and Bill Oskay on fiddle. From the Where Folk Gets The Blues CD release concert, March 10th, 2012:   "Looks Like Satin, Acts Like Steel". If you do a YouTube search for "Anne Weiss," you will find quite a few of her recordings and performances.

And whether you're coming to Singtime Frolics or not, check out Seattle Folklore Society's RainyCamp, which was originally a spin-off from Singtime Frolics and offers the same kind of fun, camaraderie and song, but much closer to Seattle (and Bellingham).

This from Robert Rodriguez:
Dear Folks-
This is to acknowledge that Barbara Millikan and I will be co-hosting a workshop at the 2013 Singtime Frolics Weekend. The title is: "The Music of Story, the Magic of Music: Songs and stories about music, musicians, especially singers, and the very power of music to bring changes to all our lives".
It will be a participatory workshop and anyone who has a song or poem or story to contribute will be happily welcome. I'm looking forward to Singtime again, to see old friends and meet new ones, and especially to take the train to get out there.

Mo Mack is planning once again to offer his "Jam It Up!" workshop.   He brings 2 or 3 possible jam songs for the workshop group to choose from, and then they all work out a jam arrangement of the song for the Saturday night concert.   It's been a real hit at Singtime for the past 2 or 3 years.

Zeke and Flip are coming. Anne has 2 workshops on Sat. (not sure of the times yet) and one Sunday morning.

Dick Hamlet is working to update the workshops lists and schedules as they come in. Check the Singtime Frolics web page for details.

From that website:
"Anne will conduct three workshops, all levels welcome:

Sing More Better:
Work on breathing, tone, power, pitch, and harmony, and practice new skills on songs from around the world.
Making a Song Your Own Or, Making Your Own Song Even Better:

Learn how to approach any song three or four different ways, to find the way most expressive for you. Bring a song to work on.

How to Get the Blues:
Blues, jazz, and gospel vocals draw on a different scale and rhythmic style. Learn how to "sing the blues" along with some theory and history."

Wow!   We have a LOT of great workshops offered so far!

Tentative Singtime Frolics 2013 Workshop List (Feb. 12, 2013)

SING MORE BETTER - Anne Weiss. Everyone can improve their singing. We'll work on breathing, tone, power, pitch, and harmony (and clarify what is which) using songs from around the world. All levels welcome! (I)•

MAKING A SONG YOUR OWN, MAKING YOUR OWN SONG EVEN BETTER – Anne Weiss. Come learn how to take any song and approach it three or four different ways until you find the way that is most expressive for you. Bring a song (or instrumental piece), any style, any language! (I, C)

SONGS WITH GREAT CHORUSES – Rob Folsom. I will say a few words about the spiritual intimacy of people singing together and what we feel for one another, then lead off with (say) "Rolling Home." Bring the chorus song that moves you the most (& lyric sheets for complex words). (S, C)

JAM IT UP! - Mo McClellan. Pick a song to perform, bring copies and chords and lyrics for the PM show (T, J )

THE MUSIC OF STORY, THE MAGIC OF MUSIC - Robert Rodriquez and Barb Millikan. Songs and stories about music, musicians, especially singers, and the very power of music to bring changes to all our lives. Anyone who has a song or poem or story to contribute will be happily welcome. (C)

VILLAINS AND HEROES - Robert Rodriquez. Share your songs about heroes and villains. (C)

SONGS OF JACOBITE RISINGS - Alan Bonney. The Risings were part of a larger series of military campaigns by Jacobites attempting to restore the Stuart kings to the thrones of Scotland and England. (T, C)

YOU'RE DONE IN THE WOODSHED, NOW IT'S TIME FOR PEOPLE - Robert Folsom and Kate Long - The purpose is to actually perform in front of the class for the song you'll sing at the Saturday night concert. (C, P)

LOVE SONG TO A PLACE - Corinne McWilliams and Dick Hamlet. = Geographical places often inspire passionate songs, from the love of a homeland lost forever, to a memory of a beautiful place seen at a special time. Bring a song to share about a special place. (C)

HOW TO GET THE BLUES – Anne Weiss. Blues, Jazz and Gospel vocals heavily influence and are influenced by what most people think of as "folk" music, but draw on a different scale and rhythmic styles. Sometimes when you are feeling down and out or up and about being able to sing the blues is just the thing! Come add to your bag of vocal tricks and learn a little extra theory and history along the way. All levels welcome! (I, C)

STARLIGHT ON THE RAILS: The songs of Utah Philips - David Blanchard. Themed song circle. I'll talk a bit about Utah but mostly I'd like us all to take part in remembering this man by singing his songs. If you want to tell a story of his or a story about him that would be welcome as well. (T, C )

GOSPEL & PEACE - Bev Kaminski - Share songs of peace, and spirituality. ( C, S)

PHYSICS OF THE HUMAN VOICE - Tim Jenkins - Fundamentals of how the human vocal tract produces sound with applications to singing.   (L)

RAILROAD SONGS -Tim Jenkins-Songs about railroads, trains, engineers, track crews, etc., both literal and metaphorical. (T, C)

DOO WOP - Dave Rabinowitz - a '60s and doo-wop participatory workshop, starting with a quick introduction to '60s chord progressions and how to sing harmony, followed by lots of group singing. (I, T,S)

MALVINA REYNOLDS SONGS.- Mary Rose (T, C S)

ROUNDS -Mary Ann Gilpatrick - Minimal basic instruction and song suggestions from song leader; please bring song sheets for less familiar rounds. (C, T, S)

Parodies - Joe Hickerson- (C)
