I have the lyrics to this song. here is the first verse:
"and now I'm past retiring time lays heavy on my hands
I think about my working days a labouring on the land
But in the blinking of an eye me childhood disappeared
At twelve years old I started work on the farms of lincolnshire"
Does any one know who wrote it and when
Thanks John

Tom Lane (Of Higgledy Piggledy) is credited as author on Bill Whaley & Dave Fletcher's CD "...Their Fine Array", the tune being one of two written for it by Dave Fletcher. Disc Ref BILDA001 is dated 1996.

Nice song, which I have never heard elsewhere.

Tom is the organiser of the 600 Whiskies FC at the George, Leadenham. I would have been seeing him tonight, but I'm smittled by the seasonal ague, so I won't be venturing out. There's a 600 Whiskies FB page which you might find interesting, and which Tom administers.

If you'd like the full text it is as follows:-

FARMS OF LINCOLNSHIRE

(TOM LANE/DAVE FLETCHER)

AND NOW I'M PAST RETIRING TIME LAYS HEAVY ON ME HAND
I THINK ABOUT ME WORKING DAYS A-LABOURING ON THE LAND
SAW IN THE BLINKING OF AN EYE ME CHILDHOOD DISAPPEAR
AT TWELVE YEARS OLD I STARTED WORK ON THE FARMS OF LINCOLNSHIRE

I'VE HERDED COWS WHEN MILKING TIME WAS DAWNS FIRST EARLY LIGHT
I'VE WATCHED A THOUSAND LAMBS BE BORN WHEN BITTER WAS THE NIGHT
I'VE WORKED THROUGH SNOW AND DRIVING RAIN SEEN EACH DAWN OF THE YEAR
WHEN I WAS JUST A WORKING LAD ON THE FARMS OF LINCOLNSHIRE

AND AT THE AGE OF SEVENTEEN THEY SIGNED ME ON FOR WAR
AND SENT ME FROM THE LAND I LOVED UNTO A FOREIGN SHORE
IN THE DESERTS OF NORTH AFRICA I LEARNT TO LIVE WITH FEAR
AND I LONGED TO BE BACK HOME AGAIN ON THE FARMS OF LINCOLNSHIRE

AND WHEN THE WAR WAS OVER WELL I LEFT THOSE BURNING SANDS
SO JOYFUL FOR TO SEE AGAIN THOSE RICH AND FERTILE LANDS
BUT THE COLOURS OF THE COUNTY CHANGED FROM GREEN TO BROWN I FEAR
THEY'D PLOUGHED THE GRASSY MEADOWS ON THE FARMS OF LINCOLNSHIRE

BUT VERY SOON I FOUND THAT I WAS BACK IN WORK AGAIN
AT LEARING HOW TO PULL THE PLOUGH AND GATHER IN THE GRAIN
AT DRILLING AND AT REAPING SOON I LEARNED TO PERSEVERE
A DIFFERENT KIND OF LABOUR ON THE FARMS OF LINCOLNSHIRE

AND AS MACHINES GOT FANCIER THEY HELPED TO EASE OUR LOAD
BUT EVERY NEW MACHINE THAT CAME SENT TWO MEN DOWN THE ROAD
THE WORK OF SEVEN FARMHANDS NOW DONE BY AN ENGINEER
MACHINES ARE NOW THE LABOURERS ON THE FARMS OF LINCOLNSHIRE

AND NOW I'M PAST RETIRING AND ME WORKING DAYS ARE DONE
AND THE FARM WHERE ME AND FATHER WORKED HAS NO WORK FOR ME SON
AND FOR TO FIND EMPLOYMENT NOW HE'S FORCED TO MOVE FROM HERE
I CURSE AND MOURN WHAT'S HAPPENED ON THE FARMS OF LINCOLNSHIRE
YES I CURSE AND MOURN WHAT'S HAPPENED ON THE FARMS OF LINCOLNSHIRE

Cheers
DF
