I'M A RAMBLER, i'M A GAMBLER
I'M A LONG WAY FROM MY HOME
IF YOU PEOPLE DON'T LIKE ME
WELL, JUST LEAVE ME ALONE

FOR IT'S DARK AND IT'S A-RAINING
THE MOON GIVES NO LIGHT
AND MY PONY CAN HARDLY TRAVEL
ON THIS DARK ROAD AT NIGHT

I ONCE HAD ME A TRUE LOVE
LORD HER AGE WAS JUST SIXTEEN
SHE WAS THE FLOWER OF BELTON
AND THE ROSE OF SALINE

BUT HER PARENTS DON'T LIKE ME
AND NOW SHE'S JUST THE SAME
SO IF I'M WRIT ON YOUR BOOKS GAL
WELL, JUST YOU BLOT OUT MY NAME

FOR THERES CHANGES IN THE OCEAN
AND THERES CHANGE IN THE SEA
AND THERES CHANGES IN MY TRUE LOVE
BUT THERES NO CHANGE IN ME

I know the first two verses as part of 'The Moonshiner'. The version I know is unlike the one in the DT, however, apart from the first verse. - Susanne

It's a song from an old Ian and Sylvia album. It is a variant to Moonshiner that may have some Canadian influences as they are Canadian. I needed to test my skills (or lack of) and submiited a song from my PC Songbook by copy/paste and add the httm brackets. It worked so now I can make some contributions to the Digital Trsdition with out ten tons of typing. Now if I could just get my scanner to work.

Mudjack, please submit in upper and lowercase type next time. All caps is very hard to read.

Sorry Alice, there is a reason for my PC song book being that way. It's so I can read from my song book when it lies on the floor or some distance. I enlarge the fonts to the max for 1 sheet of paper. I don't memorize my entire song book and often at song circles I won't carry a music stand. In other words my entire song book is done with upper case. At my age the newsprint gets smaller or my arms are not long enough to adjust for reading.
My posting this song was a test to see if I can copy/paste without re-typing the entire song. In the past(maybe 3 occasions) I would answer some one's lyric request and for a lack of know how, I typed it all out for them. Now it's a matter of copy/paste and zip, it's done. I regret the inconvienence but what you see is what you get.

I looked at Moonshiner in the DT. The following is the last verse as I recall it from Lomax's Folk Songs of North America (I'm at work, now, so I can't peek).

I'll eat when I'm hungry, I'll drink when I'm dry,
And if moonshine don't kill me I'll live 'til I die.
God bless them moonshiners, how I wish they were mine.
Their breath smells as sweet as that good old moonshine.

I do love this song. I have a fond memory of attending an open mike located in a natural amphitheater in a mature woods. I sang this song acapella and it sent chills up my spine. Just one of those magic moments.

We perform this one quite often. We've taken to a change in the lyric for the more...um...excitable crowds.

"I'm a rambler I'm a gambler I'm a long way from home and if you don't like it well then Pog mo thoin! I'll eat when I'm hungery and drink when I'm dry And if Guinness don't kill me I'll drink till I die"...

The way the crowd has joined in with this in times is quite embarrassing....

Mudjack-- Re the All Caps problem when posting: If you're using MS Word, After you select the text you're going to copy, but before you copy it, you can go to the Format pull-down, and use Change Case to make the selected text UC/lc. Then, copy and paste. Return to the original document and use change case again (or select undo the case change) and restore the case to your all UC. Just a suggestion, so Susan or Dick or Max or whoever doesn't have to retype.

Thank so much for posting all these lyrics and info...Those of you who were at FSGW might have heard what VicTim has done to this song--a little pronoun surgery, and it's from a woman's point of view. I sing it against Tim singing a similarly altered version of Pretty Mary (sometimes known as Wagoner's Lad) as (sort of) performed by PPM.

Anyway, now I've got more verses to play with!!! Thanks again!

V V
