I've got the 'House Full' lp, I just haven't got time to take the words down just now. Maybe I'll manage within the next fortnight. If I remember rightly it shouldn't be too difficult - but that's something I've thought before ... - Susanne

Now that's a really difficult one to transcribe for me due to both the singing of the McCalmans and the low quality of my tape. I can't vouch for much more than about half of the lines and I do not show all the bits I'm not yet contented with. Please help. I like the song.

Wolfgang

KORA

CH.: Kora of the upland dell,
Kora of the haunted well,
glad the bondage, sweet the spell,
rouse me, dear, to thee.

Then we wandered through the brake,
then we sailed across the lake,
smooth the waters, fair Loch Tree,
through my true love and me.

Then we climb the mountains deep,
while the world lies hushed in sleep,
often resting here to keep
magic watch that none may see.

Then ....I....
in a mossy homeland green
I will meet thee, fairy queen
in the hour that none may see.

On a very minor point - I wonder if that's "Cora" rather than "Kora"?

The McCalmans write Kora, but it could be in other places.

Wolfgang

It's just that Cora is a fairly common girls name in Ireland - so I was wondering..

Hi all.
You probably already have this link to the McCalmans site,
but I'll put it here again for what it's worth.

http://www.mccalmans.com/

(clicky maker don't seem to work)

Lots of their lyrics there but unfortunatly it doesn't have Kora
on it.

I do have the album and I'll have a listen later on and see if I can
fill in the gaps, that is if no one else beats me to it.

Cheers for now

Cattail !

Wolfgang. A difficult one for you! Not a bit of it! You've done a wonderful job of transcribing it. Much better than I could have done if I had tried it on my own from scratch.

As it was I copied and pasted your lyrics into text and then altered the text as I heard different words. (Makes it soooo much easier).

I have marked the changed words with an asterisk, (these are only what *I* hear of course), and like you, I am not entirely happy with the first line of the last verse, I hear corrie and sheen but am not very happy with the word rest, perhaps someone else can have a go at this, they may hear something different again.

If enough people have a go at it we'll end up getting it right. (Something about monkeys, years, and Shakespeare come to mind here)

Anyway, enough already, thanks again for the help Wolfgang and here's my attempt at it.

KORA

CH.: Kora of the upland dell,
Kora of the haunted well,
glad the bondage, sweet the spell,
draws* me, dear, to thee.

Then we wandered through the brake,
then we sailed upon* the lake,
smooth the waters, fair Loch Tree,
to* my true love and me.

CH.:

Then we climb the mountain steep*,
while the world lies couched* in sleep,
often resting here to keep
magic watch that none may see.

Ch.:

Then I rest, by corrie sheen***
in a mossy homeland green
I will meet thee, fairy queen
in the hour that none may see.

Ch.:

Cheers for now

Cattail !

Cattail,

Thanks a lot. I agree that improving on an already started transcription is much easier. But your improvements do make a difference for me. We are now much closer to what they sing.

Malcolm,

I'd like to know that too. I have taped that record back in those times when I didn't care about those things and only noted the title. Now it's different for me. I even have bought CDs/LPs of which I had the music on tape already just for this information.

Wolfgang

Hi all,

Malcolm. The record sleeve gives no information on the tracks at all,
the record label says "trad arr The McCalmans". Sorry I can't give
you any more than this.

Wolfgang. Thanks for the thanks, I listened to this on speakers and
two different types of headphones to pick out the various words, it
does make a difference to hear it from different sources, and at
varying volume levels.

In that first line of the last verse, the words "then I rest", sound
on the record as "then abrevst or abreast", (it certainly sounds like
a V in it), which doesn't make much sense with the context and feel of the rest of the verse, which is why I went for "then I rest". Possibly it's a dialect word of some kind, any Scots out there know
this one?

Keep at it, you'll get there in the end.

Cheers

Cattail !

From: Turlough

Hi everybody,

Herma, who started this thread many years ago, gave me the transcription of Kora that she got from Nick Keir. Although Nick never sang Kora (as far as I know), he tried to get the words, and I think he did a great job. Anyway, here it is:

Kora

Cho: Kora of the upland dell
    Kora of the haunted well
Glad the bondage, sweet the spell
    Rouse me dear to thee

Then we wandered through the brake
Then we sailed upon the lake
Smooth the waters, fair Loch Tree
Through my true love and me

Cho

Then we climbed the mountains steep
While the world lies hushed in sleep
Often resting here to keep
Magic watch that none may see

Cho

Ben a Vrecht, aye Corrie Sheen
In our mossy homeland green
I will meet thee, fairy queen
In the hour that none may see

Cho

That's it! Ben a Vrecht is a mountain, Corrie Sheen is an upland peak.
Still, I would really like to know who wrote this. It may be traditional, but even traditional songs have authors... Somehow, to me it doesn't sound like a very old song, so somebody may still know something about it. Anybody?

T.

Hi Turlough, how nice to see this finished at last, and I'm sure
Wolfgang will be pleased when he sees it.

So I was right about the V sound in the first line of last verse,
but who could have guessed that it would be the name of a mountain.

Thanks so much for putting it on here for us all, (and completing
Wolfgang's hard work).

Cheers

Cattail !

I am pleased, for sure, and say a big thanks you all. Placenames of Norse or Gaelic origin sung in Scottish dialect/language is the ultimate transcription challenge for me, a challenge I still fail each time I try.

I saw Ian McCalman recently at a folk night and asked him if he new where the song came from. He couldn't remember although he did say that he'd changed and/or added some of the words.
