Here's a promo for people in West Yorkshire: this coming Thursday 17th January 2013 Will Kaufman is presenting his travelling live documentary-cum-concert Woody Guthrie: Hard Times and Hard Travelin' at The Topic folk club in Bradford.

The show sets Woody Guthrie's songs in the context of 1930s America – the Dust Bowl, the Depression, the New Deal and the state of popular music. Consisting of songs performed by Will and accompanied by visual images, it highlights the blending of music and radical politics that marks Guthrie's most powerful work. "I urge everybody to see the show and find out more about the man who inspired so many" – Ralph McTell

In 2008 Kaufman was awarded the Woody Guthrie Research Fellowship, which enabled him to write the first political biography of Guthrie, Woody Guthrie, American Radical (2011). Here the Guardian reports on his accompanying tour.

If you can make it to Bradford, make sure you catch this one. personally I can't say it told me much that I didn't know already. But it's a very fine discourse on one of America's most important native sons from one of the leading authorities on Guthrie.

While you're at it, don't forget to buy the book.

Be great to see people at the Topic on Thursday - I heard a song sung by Will on last night's Durbervilles show and he sounded excellent!

(Professor) Will Kaufman is a scholar!

But this is an accessible and entertaining talk, illustrated by slides and Will's own performance of Woody's songs.

Kaufman is good but he doesn't have all the accurate info on Woody. How could he?
He didn't know him. Woody was singing and playing well in 1953.

It was a brilliant show - interesting and the songs very well performed indeed - I cannot recommend it highly enough - and I am not usually a fan of North American music so this is high praise indeed!

Most of us weren't there to meet Woody in person!

Will is doing his best to keep his songs in circulation and his flame burning brightly.
