The first Press Room sea music gathering of 2013 -- our monthly shanty, forebitter, and ballad song session will be happening this Saturday, January 19th, at The Press Room on Daniel St. in Portsmouth, NH from 3:30 to 7:30 PM -- and...there are NO "buts" or other caveats this month!

We sang the seasonal and winter stuff last month...anybody got a mud shanty for January's weather?

Ernie's been excused -- yes, he has a note -- but we may see some new faces (or faces we haven't seen in awhile) on Saturday.

See you there!
Linn

Weather's supposed to be grand -- warming up again after a couple cold days. Maybe not quite the 50s (F.) of last weekend.

I am unable to make it, this month, Linn. I have a fundraising meeting in West Brookfield, MA, that afternoon. I am so bummed, as I haven't been out since Oct!! I have it blocked off for February, tho.

I'll be in South Portland with Deb C and a boatload of (other) loonies, and I really wish I could be in 2 places at once!

So stop by on your way, Jeri. We start at 3:30...you'll have plenty of time to get to Portland.

I suggest everyone read "The Drunken Sailor BBC Radio 2" thread -- a recording of Barry Finn (along with Neal Downey in Finn & Haddie) singing "Good Old Brig" is being used in the documentary.

We missed you, Charley, but probably best that you stayed home, rested, and didn't spread the cold to anyone else.

Tom missed the session, too -- he didn't want to chance the tricky walking on Portsmouth street, sidewalk and the long walk to the back of The Press Room. His infected foot is better, but he fell Wednesday night and bruised his knee and the right side of his body and walking is painful.

I'll post the particulars tomorrow, but it was truly a lovely, very energetic session. And we had two tables full of people who accidently wandered in and we totally entranced by the music. I love it when I see people enjoying themselves so much at a chance encounter with trad or sea music.

Too tired (it was a pretty full, intense day) to post more right now, but I'll be back tomorrow morning with a listing of the crew and the song list.

Oh, and whoever's digital recorder was left on the piano, I have it and it's safe. I even figured out a few minutes ago how to shut it off.

Okay, we have successfully located the owner of above digital recorder. Yeehah! Thought I might have to locate a PDF manual for it...

Anywho, yesterday's crew was me (Bat Goddess, aka Linn Schulz) sans Tom (who didn't want to chance snow in the street, ice on the sidewalk, and the long, painful walk to the back of The Press Room, with an infected foot and a bruised painful knee), Peter Souza (at long last!), Emery Hutchins (back from his holiday sojourn out west), Bill Perry, Martha Bowen, Barry O'Brien, Bob Eaton, Mike Modern, Steve Smith, Justine Donovan, Don Hale, Pete Hale and Laurette Cossaboon, Dianne Lavoie, Bill Lehrman and Carol Pierson. Bob Frost (a Friday night regular and Tom's banjo-playing musical partner for the past 40 years) even showed up later and sang along and Dave Hallowell managed to get there about a half hour before wrap-up and sing a couple songs.

Gotta go make lunch, and I'll be back with the song list.

Anyway, since Tom was abdicating responsibility and I had promised to be the adult in charge, I DID think about bringing a gavel (hand-turned by David Behm) and a cat-o-nine-tails (courtesy of Sinsull -- don't ask) to maintain discipline, but it turns out I didn't need it...(well, often...).

What we sang --

1. She Belongs To Me (Bob Dylan) - Pete Souza (shoulda brought
    the cat...)
2. Astoria's Bar - Pete Souza
3. Old Zeb - Emery Hutchins (Hutch)
4. Boys of Killibeg - Bob Eaton
5. Home, Dearie, Home - Linn Schulz
6. Paddy Lay Back - Bill Perry
7. Greenland Whale Fisheries - Don Hale
8. Pay Me My Money Down - Barry O'Brien
9. Ghostly Seamen - Martha Bowen
10. Botany Bay - Mike Modern
11. Okay, there's a gap here and I don't know how many songs
were sung or what they were -- I was talking to a couple
from Northampton, Massachusetts who were visiting Portsmouth
and wandered in accidently and were totally entranced by
    the session.
14. Sir Patrick Spens - Pete Souza
15. Salonika - Hutch
16. Nine Times a Night - Linn
17. A Long Time Ago (Noah's Ark) - Bob Eaton
18. Morrissey and the Russian Sailor - Peter Hale
19. Race of Long Ago - Linn
20. All For Me Grog - Pete Souza
21. Going On Board the Rosabella - Dianne Lavoie
22. Johnson Girls - Justine Donovan
23. Where Am I To Go? - Mike
24. Rolling Down to Old Maui - Hutch
25. Sailor's Prayer (Tom Lewis) - Linn
26. Whiskey-O, Johnny-O - Bill
27. Byker Hill - Pete Souza
28. Donkey Riding - Barry
29. The Martin Greigh - Pete Hale
30. I Wish I Had Someone To Love Me - Dianne
31. Dear Abby, Dear Abby (John Prine) - Mike
32. Isle au Haut Lullaby (Gordon Bok) - Martha
33. Jock Stewart - Pete Souza
34. Bridget Flynn - Linn (a request for an Irish song)
35. Shawnee Town - Hutch
36. Farewell to Tarwaithie - Don
37. Good Old Brig - Justine (because of its use -- Barry Finn's
recording -- on Tuesday in a BBC Radio 2 documentary "Drunken
    Sailor")
38. Old Zeb - Hutch (again because Don missed it & asked for it)
39. Out On the Rolling Sea - Barry
40. Sandgate Girl's Lament - Linn (Hutch concertina accompaniment)
41. Three Score and Ten - Bob
42. Hard Times In Old Virginia - Justine
43. Good Old Newfie Outhouse - Mike
44. The Man Who Waters the Workers' Beer - Linn
45. Paddy On the Railway - Pete Souza
46. Alabama John Cherokee - Barry
47. I'll Be a Singer - Dianne
48. Being a Pirate - Bob
49. Uncle Hiram's Homemade Beer - Mike
50. The Bigler - Dave Hallowell
51. Roll the Old Chariot Along - Pete Souza
52. Plum Island National Anthem - Linn
53. Back and the Sides - Martha
54. Howard Blackburn - Barry (not sure of the title -- refers
to the Gloucester fisherman and his dorymate separated from
their schooner in the fog; he made to Newfoundland but lost
    his hands to frostbite)
55. I Wish I Were Back In Liverpool - Dave Hallowell
56. Nelson's Prayer - Pete Souza

Sure sounds like a nice session.

I did forward a copy of Barry's CD to Neil Rosser in the UK. Is he the one who was working with the BBC to broadcast "Good Old Brig"?

The cold is pretty much through its final phase, just a dry cough and some congestion.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I can fill in one of the missing songs (12? 13?). Peter (Hale) sang "South Australia". I nearly lost my voice trying to to keep up with his basso profundo. I must practice more!

It's okay, Charley. We (Steve and Justine) successfully got Neil the track last Tuesday. He wrapped the production on Friday and it airs tomorrow.

Thanks, Don! Part of my brain was paying attention (alas, my short-term memory lasted for nanoseconds) while I was telling our visitors all about session history, The Press Room, the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival, etcet etcet.
