Thanks.

Thanks, guys. They seem to be working now, but Beer was having trouble with them. I've heard from Beer, too.

There's a header for another thread.
Whence 'glitch?'
I can understand 'hitch,' a rope knot.

Thank you Joe. I was beginning to think that I upset a few folks as they were not responding to my messages.

ooooh Terry!

Does anyone know how to stop firefox deleting my mudcat cookie when it deletes the rest? I've tried the bit in options>privacy>exceptions, but perhaps i'm doing it wrong. Or if I could find where mudcat keeps cookies I could write a batch file to put that one back in?

A cookie can be "permanent," with or without an expiration date, or you can get a "session cookie" that is intended to be deleted when you leave the site. There are variations more or less continuously between the two, possibly controlled just by how long it takes to get to an expiration date.

The different browsers appear to handle cookies a little differently, and presence of a "cookie blocker" may affect permanence of the cookies as well. The cookie blocker can be a separate program, or may be built into your AV or browser or in browser toolbars, and with the insistence on adding "other features you need" you may have one or several you don't even realize are on your computer.

In IE, if you put mudcat into your Privacy settings as a trusted site, the cookie will almost never crumble.

In IE: Tools - Interent Options - Privacy Tab - Sites Button, type "mudcat.org" without the quotes in the site address box and click allow. Mudcat.org will appear in the lower box with "always allow" and your cookie usually will stay in place the next time you log in and should be ignored by Disk Cleanup or browser cleanup routines. This seems to work regardless of all the blockers that come and go when toolbars etc change things "to help you."

I can't give instructions for Firefox, but there should be a similar setting there that might help. Maybe one of our FF users can offer more specific instructions.

Mudcat doesn't decide where to put your cookies. Your OS (and/or your browser) decides where they go.

John

Thanks John, that set me looking, and I have it right now; at least with IE. MS in their usual wisdom have put the vital tickbox where it doesn't appear until you've pressed "delete", - which doesn't delete anything, but gives you more choices. "Preserve favourites" is the one. This of course means mudcat has to be a 'favourite'. I've never used favourites ever, I prefer to keep my internet shortcuts (and everything else) well away from where windows can delete them if it gets into a strop. But there's a first time for everything! FF will have to go back on hold.

ripov -

I don't recognize your description, and wonder if you're using IE10/Win8. I don't have any ideas about what they've changed there, but the clues I've seen indicate lots of vagaries.

Through IE9/Win7, Favorites are the links to websites that you can save. They're under your username on the system drive, in a folder called "Favorites," and aren't temporary files so they wouldn't be cleared by any shutdown/cleanup operations. Logins are generally via a cookie in "Temporary Internet Files," (also under your username, but buried pretty far down in the tree) and putting mudcat.org in the "trusted site" list in IE is the simplest way to allow the 'cat to give you a "permanent" (or at least persistent) cookie that will stick at least until it expires.

If you're happy, I won't worry about it.

John

No John - W7, IE9.

In tools>internet options> (tick 'delete browsing history on exit') then 'delete' which opens another window, tick 'preserve favorites' and then press 'delete' (you would expect a 'save settings', but no)

in w98 days, before I learned better, I thought the idea of a computer was that you could set it up how you liked! And with w98 you could 'easily' change things. Sometimes changing things didn't work, and neither did the pc (os that is) afterward! So I did a lot of reinstalling windows. Which overwrites everything you've done. And you must start all over again.
So I soon learnt that the way out was to partition the disc and move everything off the os partition, including things like the start menu, send to menu (which worked properly in w98), and quick launch, as well as documents. So a hierarchy of folders with url's was included. And copied from one machine to another through the ages.
Hence, I've never used favorites; or wab, preferring to keep my addresses seperate and encoded.
With w7 I've given up trying . The continual arguing with it over which folders are whose and what I can and can't do has made me a very grumpy old man. But I don't have to reinstall it often. At all, in fact. Two system restores in a year, that's all.
If only MS would write an os as good as 98 and as pretty as 7.
Anyway, thanks for the help.
Ripov
