Subject: Review: Nick Drake's Mother (Molly) From: Jim Martin Date: 19 Jan 13 - 05:57 AM Interesting review of Molly's record: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2013/jan/17/molly-drake-molly-drake-review?INTCMP=SRCH |
Subject: RE: Review: Nick Drake's Mother (Molly) From: GUEST,Big Al Whittle Date: 19 Jan 13 - 06:38 AM Most of us Nick Drake fans could have been trusted to find the record and were well aware of Molly's influence. Tend to think the Guardian should maybe be a bit more adventurous -a bit more enquiring about wots going on now. |
Subject: RE: Review: Nick Drake's Mother (Molly) From: Jim Martin Date: 20 Jan 13 - 07:27 AM My humble apologies I'm sure - only trying to help. This is the kind of response that puts off some newcomers to Mudcat! |
Subject: RE: Review: Nick Drake's Mother (Molly) From: GUEST,Peter Trout Date: 20 Jan 13 - 05:00 PM I quite agree Jim! Whats up with you Big Al? Get out of bed the wrong side.... and leave your brains behind?? |
Subject: RE: Review: Nick Drake's Mother (Molly) From: Rog Peek Date: 20 Jan 13 - 05:47 PM I also agree! I am not a particular fan of Nick Drake, but am always interested in these snippets of information which often lead me to look a little more closely at those reported on. One of the reasons I visit so regularly and recommend to others. Rog |
Subject: RE: Review: Nick Drake's Mother (Molly) From: matt milton Date: 20 Jan 13 - 06:41 PM thanks for letting me know. I love the Molly Drake songs on the moving "Family Tree" compilation. They work really well in that context - nestled up against Nick's home-recorded covers of blues tracks and gospel tracks sung with his sister. I for one didn't know that there was a Molly Drake album. I'll definitely give it a listen. Jim - have you ever heard of Connie Converse? I only came across her wonderful music recently - a bit of a latecomer - but it's in the same ballpark. Literate, a bit "posh old lady"ish but really one-of-a-kind. http://connieconverse.bandcamp.com/ |
Subject: RE: Review: Nick Drake's Mother (Molly) From: GUEST,Big Al Whittle Date: 20 Jan 13 - 06:43 PM No offence intended. I suppose I have the zeal of the recently converted when it comes to Nick Drake. So i've read just about everyword written about him in the last two years or so. The Molly connection is pretty much a given. well known to even the casual Drake anorak. Have said that she was very much a dilletante - really only of historical interest. and there are people out there of real talent flogging their bollocks off 24/7 at the music game, who would give anything for Guardian review. People who are alive and really deserve a break. jed Marum and Brian Peters - out of our mudcat community leap out in my mind straight away as more worthy of Guardian reviews. |
