Written and performed by Alex Campbell: I have it by him on a 2006 3-CD compilation set "Borderlands: the best of Scottish Folk", where the credit is Campbell and the publication date is 1965.

But the sleeve notes say no more than "his de facto signature tune, the world-weary 'Been On The road So Long'"

I went to see him in Chichester and he sang this song, which he wrote.

Yes it was on a single. Because it was on the coffee bar jukebox in Exeter's very bohemian El Zamba coffee bar.

Also we all learned it off bert jamsch's It Don't Bother Me album - plua few Jansch style guitar histrionics.

Wish i was 16 again!

I recorded Alex singing this, his own song, on an LP called Unity Creates Strength, a money making LP for the Upper Clyde Shipbuilders sit in in 1972, NEV LP 007.
