Another contribution

GHOST OF BRAS D'OR
(Words and music by Charlie Mckinnon, I think)

Piper Donald John MacPherson volunteered for overseas,
With the plaid of the MacPhersons gaily swinging 'round his knees.
On farewell leave from Halifax, he marched along the shore,
And his parents went to meet him, by the waters of Bras d'Or.

Piper Donald John MacPherson, at the closing of the day,
Marched down to the little steamer that would take him on his way.
He played the Scottish melodies 'til he reached the other shore,
And he walked toward the sunset from the waters of Bras d'Or.

Well he wrote to them from England, told of places he had been.
He had been to London Castle and he'd played before the Queen.
He had been to bonnie Scotland, all along the English shore.
He saw nothing like the maples by the waters of Bras d'Or.

Mother, Dear, I've been promoted; I'm a Sergeant-Major, now.
And I wear a blue Glengarry with a badge upon my brow.
Sometimes in dreams I see you standing by the cabin door,
While my father plays the bagpipes by the waters of Bras d'Or.

Then one day there came a letter, and this is how it read.
"Piper Donald John MacPherson killed in action," so it said.
Kindly friends and neighbours gathered in the cabin by the shore,
And they heard the Last Post sounding o'er the waters of Bras d'Or.

Now, there's a piper on the hill-side at the closing of the day.
You can hear his stirring music as the sunset fades away.
You can see him though the maples as he marches near the shore,
And he enters in the cabin by the waters of Bras d'Or.

You will find some notation for the song here but I think that it is partly based on of Donald McLean's Farewell To Oban.

The lyrics were written by Lillian Crewe Walsh and the music by Charlie MacKinnon. This is a song that I sing a lot. I do it in bagpipe pitch (Bb) but I will transcribe it in "G" capo on 3rd fret.

(G) Piper Donald John Mac(G7)Pherson (C)volunteered for over(G)seas,
With the (C)plaid of the Mac(G)Phersons gaily (Am)swinging 'round his (D)knees.
On (G)farewell leave from (G7)Halifax, he(C) marched along the (G)shore,
And his (C)parents went to (G)meet him, by the (D)waters of Bras (G)d'Or
