Have heard back from Azizi; unfortunately, she doesn't know of anywhere to suggest. It was nice to "meet" her, though -- and she asked me to thank you for thinking of her, Jack, and to give you her regards.

So -- back to the drawing board... Are there any Chicago-area Catters out there who might be able to help?

Thanks, Jack!

Azizi looks like a very good lead indeed. Have found her website, http://www.cocojams.com/, (and very cool it is, too!) and sent off an e-mail to her; fingers crossed.

Thanks again,

Vikki

Azizi Powell would probably know better than anyone here - she's in Pittsburgh but I bet she knows about community/educational stuff in Chicago too. I doubt she checks PMs or threads here very much these days, but she's contactable at her Cocojams website.

Here's a link to the other thread: "Storytelling books 2 donate"

Hello folks,

My parents are seriously downsizing (due to age) and my mother has an amazing and extensive collection of drums - and other rhythm instruments - from all over the world.

Once they move, there won't be space for more than a few drums, so she/we have been trying to think of a place where such a collection would be appreciated and used - frequently and by kids, with luck - ideally by troubled/disadvantaged kids.

Mom spent many years working with emotionally troubled kids and/or kids from disadvantaged backgrounds, and knows personally what music can mean to them, and how it can make a difference in their lives. Her collection is geared towards teaching and participation; even working with a large group, there are always enough instruments for everyone to have one.

Can anyone suggest an appropriate place? (Note: we're aware of the Oldtown School of Folk music, but if there is somewhere (school? community center? music school/shop? library? hospital? youth program?) that is perhaps less well-known/not as well supported, we'd prefer to donate to such a place...)

Mom & Dad have problems driving anywhere distant, and are so overwhelmed with stuff to do (trying to move within the next 3-4 months, which is a very tall order for them!), so someplace that could come and pick up the collection would be ideal - though not an ironclad requirement.

I wish I could do more for them myself, but it's hard from over here in Sheffield.

Any suggestions, folks?

P.S.
Mom also did storytelling, and has a BIG collection of books of folktales and stories from all over the world, which she is also looking to donate
(I'll start another thread for that, as well).
