Thank you! Looks like I've gained four for the price of one.

Andrea

Damn. My apologies to all and sundry. I was unable to open the PDF link and what I suggested Andrea do leads to the link Mick posted. Maybe I'll keep the beer and take a computer course instead, or get glasses (to wear, not for the beer).

That's fine, Martin. Never a problem between us. Besides, I really do have to give up cheap beer.

Subject: Lyr Add: FAIRINGS (Helen Taylor, Easthope Martin)
From: Jim Dixon

FAIRINGS
Words, Helen Taylor. Music, Easthope Martin.
London: Enoch & Sons, ©1912.

CHORUS: Come, my young master, and mistress too,
Fairings in plenty, and all for you!

1. Apples and pears, juicy and mellow;
Honey-sweet plums, purple and yellow;
Candies and sweets, cakes made of honey.
Lasses and lads, out with your money!

2. Ribbons of green, orange and blue, miss;
Kerchiefs of silk, dainty as you, miss;
Brooches and beads, which will you buy, sir?
Lockets and rings—maidens are shy, sir!

It's not fairings, it's PAIRINGS. Google

Pairings in plenty and all for you Ribbons of blue orange and green sir

and you will be taken to

[PDF] EA - UR Research

Check that out. I think it may be what you seek, Andrea.

Here's a pdf with the score for Fairings: Four Songs of the Fair, words by Helen Taylor, music by Easthope Martin. The lyrics are on page 2, the score on page 4.

Fairings also crop up in Oh Dear What Can the Matter Be? (Roud 1279):

Oh dear, what can the matter be?
Dear dear, what can the matter be?
Oh dear, what can the matter be?
Johnny's so long at the fair.

He promised he'd bring me a fairing to please me
And then for a kiss, oh, he vowed he would tease me.
He promised to bring me a bunch of blue ribbons
To tie up my bonny brown hair.

He promised he'd bring me a basket of poses,
A garland of lilies, a garland of roses,
A little straw hat to set off the blue ribbons
That tie up my bonny brown hair.

Interesting word, "fairings". Means small gifts brought home from the fair and presented to one's "true love". Ended up in the Irish language as féirín with the simple meaning of a present or gift.

Hi!

I used to sing this song at school - we called it Fairings. The words I can remember are: -
Come my young master and mistress too
Fairings in plenty and all for you
Ribbons of blue orange and green sir
Kerchiefs of silk dainty as you miss
Lasses and lads out with your money!

I'd be really grateful if anyone knows it and can help me with both words and music.

Love this site. The Singing Together threads truly brought back happy memories. Movement and music was dire... But oh, the fights over who got the glockenspeil, so often it was the maracas, the scraper thing or the claves...

Thanks!
