Return button is not available. You have to hit the close cross.
In Googlechrome you are chucked off the net.
Or, is there a trick?

You could try a different browser - one that allows you do what you want to rather than what Google wants you to do.

I almost never use Chrome, because I like more visibility of the menu and controls... but I think ctrl-W works for any browser...or almost any program.

Do be aware that ctrl-W closes whatever is 'in focus'... whether it be a tab or the entire browser.
