Subject: Lyr Add: FAREWELL TO THE HOUSE (Chris Caswell)
From: GUEST,Steve Baughman
Date: 26 Jan 13 - 08:20 PM

It is just not right that such a gorgeous song is not more widely sung, nor that the words are so hard to find. Here they are, complete and original, given to us directly by Chris, with one additional verse composed by me and Valerie Rose and sung for Chris in his living room a week before his death.

Thanks, Chris, for a life well spent.

Farewell to the House, by Chris Caswell (original text)

FAREWELL TO THE HOUSE
copyright 1983 Chris Caswell

Farewell to the house, remember its pleasures.
Take leave of the oak and the ivy also, to
Hold fast the fields that as children we treasured,
For we live now beyond all we know

May we find home, home, wherever we roam,
Though night and storm lie between us.
Home, home, the morning will come,
With friends to restore us again.

Here's to the stories that cling to its chimneys,
Here's to the dances stepped out on its floor.
Here's to the family and friends that it's sheltered
Whose shadows forget now its door.

May they find home... etc

When I'm weary with road, behind and before me,
When old friends have fallen and young love has fled,
May fate and its fortune return and reclaim me
At evening and lay me to bed.

May I find home, home... etc

Long may the arms of a loved one surround you,
Long may the face of an old friend be near.
Long may the walls of your kitchen resound
With the voices of young children clear.

May you find home, home... etc.

ADDITIONAL VERSE WRITTEN AND SUNG FOR CHRIS

Here's to Chris Caswell and the music you brought us
To the tunes, and the laughter and the whisky also
Late nights of harping and drumming and piping
You've giv'n us far more than you know.

May you find home, home... etc.

Hi Michael
I do not know that it exists anywhere in recorded form. We will be singing it at the Freight next Monday, perhaps someone will record and post.

Oh, the house ... the beautiful, gracious house where the Caswells lived in my youth. I knew it well. I danced Strip the Willow up and down its welcoming front hall. I climbed that ivy, and once spent a long summer night sitting under that spreading oak tree.

Saying goodbye to that gracious house brought at least two great songs to life: this one and Danny Carnahan's "Dram to Warm the Piper."

Such memories...
Claire

Steve, if you all could record it at the Freight, I could transcribe it and put it in the folknik (with appropriate permissions). Any chance you could send me an MP3 of you singing it even?
I've been puzzling over how to get in touch with you after we talked after the last In Harmony's Way... about singing without paper... my contact info is in the folknik, or you can reach me here if you join.
Blessings
Barbara

Yikes, can someone else volunteer for this? I have no recorder that works. It is a good idea.
sorry,

I;ll bet that whoever does audio for the house there might be able to capture the moment or allow someone to tap into the sound board!

I think that a YouTube video of this song would be a fitting tribute to Chris. Steve, you have some terrific YouTubes posted - could you do one of this song, so Barbara and the rest of us could all hear it?

Chris gave a house concert at my home in Auburn in 2008, and sang this song. I only have audio, so I put together a photo montage of Chris, and included the lyrics.

You can see it here:

Please 'like' it, post it on Facebook, send it to friends. This is a beautiful song, and a tribute to a wonderful soul.

Thank you, Sharon, that was beautiful. Hope to see you Monday at the benefit or Wednesday at In Harmony's Way.

We sang this at SFFMC (San Francisco Folk Music Club)'s Camp New Harmony over New Years, and I wrote it down as a song I wanted to learn -- and now I can.

Thank you so much. Just what I wanted and was looking for. Does anyone know who I ask for permission to run this in the folknik? Next of kin?

Can any of you who will be at tomorrow's gathering find out for me about permission to run the song in the folknik? I'm not sure who to ask.
Tanks
Blessings,
Barbara
