Hello all,

My name is Sinéad; some may already know me; 20 year old female, long dark hair (sometimes ginger!). To those who don't: hello!

Anyway, I'm just starting this thread to let you know that I will be starting a new folk club in Maidstone.

We hope to incorporate bi-monthly events which welcome songs and tunes alike, with hearty chorus singing at the end.

Additionally we will be booking artists quarterly, and running workshops with the artists in their chosen instrument.

The first workshop is likely to be with Sam Sweeney for intermediate fiddle.

I am in the process of getting the ball rolling and tonight I've created a facebook page, so please "like" us if you have an account!

https://www.facebook.com/TheThreeRavensFolkClub

Do let me know if you're interested in helping out, or looking for a booking.

Regards,
Sinéad.

Good luck with your club Sinéad.

I can't make Fb work just now, but we're just a few miles away in Marden, and play and sing like this: http://julieandhersqueeze.com and also play a lot of trad music, and run events at Frittenden and Horsmonden... http://singdanceandplay.net

So we know what it is to get into organising this kind of thing... Hard work and very rewarding when you make it work. So good luck to you!

Gavin

Hello Gavin, nice to hear from you! We have met- I've been to the Frittenden session a couple of times with Sam (fiddle player)... I sang the bitter withey?

Ha, nice to hear from you, thanks for the support :)

If you drop me a line I'd like to add you to our mailing list, with your permission of course.

Gavin

Tuesday is a head-to-head clash with the Good Intent in Rochester - they have singarounds 1st and 3rd Tuesdays (but never 5th) and small concerts 2nd Tuesdays.

Good luck with this Sinéad!
A bit far for me to visit on a worknight, but maybe when I've got a Wednesday off.

Sounds interesting, Sinead! With gigs and other commitments, I don't have a lot of free time left, but I'll come when I can.

I suppose whatever night you put it on, it's going to clash with something. As Richard said above, Tuesdays would clash with the Good Intent. It would also clash with the Flower Pot open mic. I don't know how much overlap there'd be between the two.

Anyway, good luck with it. Onward and upward!

Kevin

Hope this is a success. I've been thinking for a while now that one of the things we need is more clubs being run by younger people. I think it would encourage younger audiences, and get rid of the image of folk clubs being for old gits like me. Can only be a good thing can't it? I'll try to get there when I'm down that way. (You can hear some of my stuff on my website: harmoniumhero.com )
Good luck. John Kelly.

Hi
Its really good that another folk club is opening in north kent. Well done.
Some advice
It can be a lot of work. Try to get a small group to share the work with clear roles.
Have clear aims. By the sound of it you already have some ideas of these - lots of communal singing and playing - methinks. If that is the case you might like to start the evening ( or end it ) with someone who is prepared to lead some simple tunes and/or choras songs.
Establish protocols - eg no talking while someone else is singing eg 8 minites maximum for floor singers eg one slot for solos. 2 for duos etc. Electric or acoustic?
Have good compares - people who know about following less inspiring singers and players with someone who can pick up the pace again.
Have a seperate email account - there are loads of agents who can be quite active trying to get bookings for their flock. You'll get inundated.
I shall be intereseted to Know how you get on.
FloraG ( fiddle player with Rakes of Rochester barn dance band).

Hi Sinead
I run the Good Intent folk club in Rochester. Although we have sessions every 1st and 3rd Tuesday, I do not see a conflict of interest. We are not in it for the money, but to promote music, both traditional and contemporary by local people. I wish you the best of luck and if I can be of help, please contact simon.barlow3@btinternet.com

Hi Sinead,

I wonder if after a year you have been sucessful in finding a venue?
If so, how sucessful your operation has been?

I ask, because as a committee member of Marden Village Club,I was thinking of suggesting to a committee meeting the idea of hosting a monthly folk club.

Please let me know either way.

Best regards,

Chris.

intersting comment, in my opinion folk clubs should be inclusive, regardless of age.
