Try Old Blind Dogs Play Live - that should get the blood pumping. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_XFy3K7AqQ

I like the "dreaded elliptical trainer" too, but I usually watch the TV--news or something. It gets too monotonous otherwise. I couldn't listen to folk because I'd be singing or voice-noodling along, and I'd surely annoy other people.

I go to a civilized gym where the thump music is not too intrusive. I have several playlists for my efforts on the dreaded elliptical trainer, and all of them are full of rock n roll. The one folk album that really works for me at the gym is "Jiig" by Ian Robb and three other musical geniuses.

Eric Clapton still gets me goin' after all these years ...

I listen to L. Cohen, Jennifer Warnes, and a variety of traditional folk music on my mp3 while walking on my treadmill and lifting (light) weights at home. No gym for me.

having been put off going to the gym for many years by pumping, heavy shit music (and laziness)i found a solution by digging out a walkman and my old cassette recordings of andy kershaw radio programmes from the 1990s. reggae, fiddle tunes and cajun stuff work best but i also particularly enjoy ivor cutler, leonard cohen or incredible string band while on that cross-step thing - just for the incongruous surrealism. i also found a solution to the shit music in the room - turn it down or off, whenever i have been in there, there are only ever at most 3 or 4 folk sweating away, all with their own headphones. when i have asked folk if they mind if i turn the screen music down/off - no-one has ever said no and i have often been thanked. do it once and it is as easy as owt to do every time. so now the only excuse is laziness....

Always found, no matter how good the "noise cancelling" earphones, folk is drowned out by the crap thud thud "music" coming over the gym's speaker system. I've tried several different fitness chains and they all pump out the same crud. Payola?

You could try the two recent Old Swan Band albums, Swan For The Money and Still Swanning. Lots of toe-tapping, muscle popping stuff on both.

I tried working out in a gym after work. But, since I work at a Park district fitness center, I quickly discovered that after eight hours of working, I was ready to go home. So, that didn't do so well for me. Best of luck. I just read books while peddling on an exercise bike or a sure tread. Some fiddle tunes would work probably, I would be too distracted by the words to pay attention to the work out routine.

I have a lot of folk on my jogging playlist. Quebecois reels are reely great, especially La Bottine Souriante, and for halfway through nothing beats a Breton bagad for bucking up the feet.

So, I recently joined the gym (humble brag) and been listening to music while there. Since I like folk, its been folk.

So far, I've found the following work as good gym songs
  • Fay Hield - Parson's Gate
  • Crucible - Collier Lads

That's a short list... Anyone any suggestions for other things. I tried a shanty but it somehow didn't work on weights. The two above I found on the running machine.

Fire away Mudcat!
