We down here in DC seem to have dodged this one, but the Winter ain't over yet. |

Got water, got coffee and condiments, got toilet paper (important to have even when it's not going to snow), and also bought a snow rake. Every year so far, I realize I need one when all the hardware stores are sold out. THIS year, the store had a load of them, and one came home with me. Put seed in the bird feeder earlier, and filled my car up with gas. If my power goes out and is expected to remain so for a while, I will shovel out, rake the roof, and bugger off somewhere where there's power. I probably don't have enough money to go get to, and hang out in southern Italy until spring, but I can dream. |

We have electric in the kitchen, but in a real emergency (2 days or more of no power) I have an old gas range in part of my basement workshop..[used to be an apartment].. that I can uncover, turn on, and use by light of LED lamps. Have used it 3 times in 20 years. I keep intending to keep a bag of charcoal for cooking outside, On back porch) but keep forgetting. Y'all stay warm & safe. |

We have a propane range, as well as our excellent woodstove that provides our daily heat and is designed to be cooked upon. We have extra feed and water for the chickens and have insulated their coop with hay and plastic. We always have snow shovels, roof rakes, oil lamps, kerosene, candles, fire extinguishers, LED lamps, battery lamps that light up when the power fails, working smoke alarms, charcoal for the BBQ outside, and many gallons of water for drinking, cooking, flushing, and washing. We have cooked, frozen, canned, and dried food, fuel, chainsaws, axes, weather radios, batteries, a full range of first aid supplies, sand and salt for ice, generator (used to pump water after the fire), five cords of firewood in the basement and more outside, and best of all, each another. As the storm swirls around outside we'll check in with neighbors in case they are in need of a helping hand. The power never fails for long enough for me. I love the peace. |

Although hurricane warnings have been dropped for the offshore region of Maine, the combination of the two fronts is still considered a blizzard with strong winds, stronger gusts, and deep drifts expected. |

The wind on its own can cause problems, but snow that piles up on trees until they break and kill power lines/poles is the major threat. |

Friday night, and stay that way thru Sat... which will help a bit avoiding sticking to lines & trees. I suppose that the wind will be a mixed blessing. Warmer and sunny on Sunday, and staying warm first of the week, so lots of melting and refreezing at night. |

Y'all northern folks all stay safe! Jeri, I have one of these just for times when the power goes out for several days due to ice storms. Cheap. I don't eat much stuff out of cans, but do keep stuff like canned beans and corn, Uncle Ben's quick cooking converted brown rice, canned chicken and tuna, hearty soups, and "shudder" boxes of mac and cheese mixes, evaporated milk, quick cooking oatmeal or cream of wheat, etc., on hand for emergency supplies, as well as a small single cup cone coffee filter. Stuff that can be easily be made into small one-pot meals and that doesn't require refrigeration when the power goes out for extended periods, and that doesn't take long to cook. Those little propane cannisters aren't cheap, so I don't want to set something cooking that is going to take time and propane. I also have a couple of small propane heaters that a 1 lb bottle of propane screws into. My house is small, and so are the rooms, so one room can be closed off and kept warm enough. Won't keep the pipes from freezing though. |

Where the heck did youse grow up? I am in Moncton, NB.ca This is where your snow "storms" stall and stay. They pass by youse and come up the Bay of Fundy... hit the isthmus and STALL (see Sandy's post). I have seen 3 days of heavy snow and had to squeeze out the back door and ROLL on the snow to get snowshoes on so I could shovel snow so we could see out the living room window. A FOOT of snow? A BIT of a wind? (or even TWICE that???)I am not saying it couldn't turn into a real Noreaster but I think I'll save the panic for when it's required. Even then, from the posts above, none of you are as prepared as I am... any of you cook a big boiled dinner yet? Am I the only one who thinks it's JUST winter in this neck of the woods? and it ain't near as bad as it used to be? Seriously... a wee bit of snow and wind? I thought all the hype was just TV stuff... more viewers = more advertising $. Are youse really fearful of this WEE bit of weather or is it just that you are cautious about what could happen (valid point)? |

One guy said "maybe as much as 0.1 inch!!!!". Meanwhile our underground reservoir is down 4 feet for the year in the western half of the state, and about half that here. Replenishment rate in a "normal" year is about 1 inch per year for either end of it, but we haven't had one of those "normal" ones for quite a while. Whether you really need a jacket to go shopping depends on the time of day, but it's cool enough for the last couple of weeks to be a good idea to at least have one in the truck. We'd love to have to worry about a real bunch of miserable weather, but by the time any such stuff arrives it'll prob'ly just be dry twisters. John |

Mum was upset as of supper time news yesterday and not a flake will fall until after midnight tomorrow night... can't... too fuckin cold! |

Snowfall for this one could easily be over two feet of snow with very strong winds and bitter cold. Many of our neighbors are in poor housing and have no emergency heating and no way to stock up on food and water. Mind you, we have no patience for fear-mongers on the tele for the reasons you mention. Those of us who have lived through severe weather in the past know to be prepared well ahead of time, but lots of folks are out of practice and/or overly dependent upon electricity. This area was without electricity for over two weeks after the ice storm about 10 years ago. |

Here is an account from Environment Canada's weather web site: ""White Juan 2004 Halifax Forecasters called it an old-fashioned nor'easter but for most Maritimers it was Hurricane Juan in sheep's clothing. They dubbed it White Juan - a hurricane disguised as a blizzard. Late on February 17, an ordinary winter storm centred over Cape Hatteras, North Carolina suddenly intensified over the Gulf Stream before striking the Maritimes. Its central pressure, one mark of a storm's intensity, plunged 57 mb in 42 hours, making it one of the most explosive weather bombs ever - even more powerful than its namesake Hurricane Juan that struck the same area five months earlier. All the same, I'll take my spiked stick when I go to the fishmonger's this afternoon. The lumps of ice on the sidewalks are a real menace to pedestrians at the best of times, and potentially lethal when covered with fresh snow. |

Meanwhile this wimpy Brit is staying indoors for the duration. |

We've lived much of our lives with newspapers and radio instead of TV and internet. The newspapers told us about the storm we just went through, and if the radio people were broadcasting we knew someone somewhere was getting into work so we'd go into work too. We went through some doozie storms and no one ever got all in a tizzy about it. Our parents sent us to check on elderly people to see if they needed anything and we shoveled their doorways and walks and brought in their wood or coal because we were instructed to do that, and if we got a scoff of cookies and tea or warm milk we said thank you. And if we accepted a nickel or dime for our efforts we got a clip on the ear and had to take it back with our apologies for having been such opportunistic cads to have accepted it in the first place. It's snowing here, btw, and it will continue until it stops. |

Snow is to be expected, even though the past two winters have been "open" winters with very little snow. And this is going to be SNOW -- not "wintry mix", not snow turning to rain. It's not going to be THAT cold (not summer, but 40°F by Tuesday) and it's supposed to be light and FLUFFY, not sodden heavy wire-pulling-down crap. Okay, it'll be windy so there'll be drifting. I think the worse problem will be high tide Saturday morning in Hampton, NH around 10. And further up the coast. High tide with the wind behind it. But I'm not only inland, but a bit uphill, too, from the coast. As usual, in case of power failure (altogether too common since we're with the Co-op where the power goes out if a butterfly slams into a pole), we've got water, beer, food that can be eaten cold, batteries, everything that needs charging is charged, firewood and a woodstove. Winter of 2007-2008 it snowed every third day. I remember it well as I broke my arm in December and we HAD to plow the driveway each and every time it snowed so I could get to doctors, etc. You'd just get it cleaned up and we'd have another 6+ inches. There's a lot of talk lately about New England's "Blizzard of '78" -- the anniversary was Feb. 6. I was living in Cape Porpoise, Maine at the time and managing a year-round shop in Kennebunkport. Not so much snow as the rest of New England, but ice and flooding. Some of the highest tides of the year, high storm surge and the wind pushing it. The Lord's Point Inn washed out to sea. We (on Cape Porpoise) were an island -- Back Cove and Porpoise Cove met...again. What a lot of people forget is we had practice a month previous with the storm of January 9th. Yesterday morning I reread my clipping from the York County Coast Star of all the coastal damage in Maine. When the river started coming through the floorboards of the shop, I got wires off the floor, secured the place and waded out to my ride home, getting there before the Cape was cut off. Reminded myself with the picture in the paper of the amount of water at the foot of my road. In the early April storm of 1982, Tom and I were snowed in here in Nottingham for over three days (while my boss fretted). Heavy, wet snow -- that's the stuff I hate. And even with the town clerk living next door (Nottingham was shut down until she could get out), it was 3 days before they finally got a front end loader through the road. And it got stuck just above us. This nor'easter is certainly not going to be as annoying as it could be. But we don't intend to drive to Portsmouth for the Press Room session this afternoon. The beautiful part of "retirement" is I don't have to drive when the weather sucks. We'll have to make music at home. Linn |

The thing about that storm was the timing - kids were in school, folks were at work when it started to snow 2 inches/hour. By the time everyone looked up, they all headed home at the same time, completely clogging Route 128, the beltway around Boston. Took a week or more to rescue all the folks and tow away all the stranded cars. This time, schools are closed and folks are warned to stay home. If we do get those drifts and heavy snow (there were 10 foot drifts in my driveway in '78) at least the plows will be able to get to work. |

Of course, we've had two pretty much snowless winters the past two years. December's 14" a few days after Christmas was more snow than the past two winters combined. That's NOT normal (historically, at least) for New Hampshire. But there IS such a thing as climate change... This nor'easter looks like it will be on the slightly better side of "normal" -- at least it's going to be fluffyish snow and not going to be rained on. And the higher winds should keep it from piling up on trees and power lines. I rather wish it wouldn't interfere with this evening's regular Friday session at The Press Room, though. I've got photos from the '80s to pass around and a book for a friend that I forgot last week. Ah well. 'Twill wait for next Friday... I lived near the "chicken factory" on Robinson Street for a few months when I was 9 years old. When a truckload of chickens were delivered in cages, many would escape and there would be eggs to be had... we first filled out pockets with eggs and then went after the chickens that would head for a patch of alders. I was proud of myself for being able to carry eggs in my pockets and chase chickens thru the alders with getting any of the eggs broken in my pockets. First time I sold a chicken (2 actually, for 25p each), I proudly presented the 50p to me mere and was told to take it back and apologize. After that, I went after the chickens, not the eggs, and brought them straight to me mere. She was cool with that. >:-) |

It is good to see people preparing in a way they didn't during '78. I have food which doesn't need heating, but if the power goes out I will have no heat. Some people, mostly in southern RI, are already without power. My lights have flickered a few times, and the storm won't peak for a few hours and will last hours longer. I know the winds are too strong for workers to be allowed to work on power lines. I have a wind-up flashlight and a wind-up radio. We have blizzard conditions. The governors of MA and CT ordered all vehicles except for emergency and service vehicles off the roads as of 4 PM: RI's governor ordered that as of 5 PM. We are expecting two feet or more of snow but much higher drifts because of the wind. If I do lose power and the house gets cold, I'll move myself into the bathroom located in the center of my condo unit. I'll put a yoga mat on the floor. It'll be tight, but I can sleep there. On an older thread, someone (gnu, maybe?) posted about a MotoMaster eliminator. I looked for it or something similar at several places, including some I hate to go to because of the way they treat employees, but I couldn't find it or anything similar. |

Just be advised that one shouldn't rely on such for anymore that a light source with one a them there new fangled light bulbs and powering a PC to check with your power company on the net about the expected end to the power outage. I have five of them so I can keep Mum's TV on for 6 hours, a light for her on for two days and I can check on the outage at one hour intervals for two days. In hot or cold weather, I fire up the genie after 6 hours to heat or cool her house. Me... I have a wood stove to keep the pipes from freezing and have enough wood to do that for 4 months. And, I have a maple tree in my back yard and two bucksaws in my garage. I also have dog treats... my neighbour's dog is a small dog, but he'll do in a pinch. |

But I'm downstairs a bit earlier than usual, coffee's made, checking here, and I'll start the scrambled eggs with cream cheese soon...just in case. Doesn't appear to be a hug amount of snow...more than a foot, perhaps, less than two feet. But it's still snowing and blowing...definitely a lot of drifting, so it's hard to tell from the door to the deck. My plow guy plowed last night around 9, but you'd never know it to look at it. Snow is drifted in the corners of ALL the windows on ALL sides of the house, which certainly is a commentary on the wind. Interesting patterns on the door as welll. Didn't drink the porter last night...had a yen for a tropical drink and discovered I had rum, orange juice, falernum, grenadine and limes and maraschino cherries, so I sipped Planter's Punch. I even had a tropical swizzle stick (though no little paper umbrella). And I read last month's issue of Vanity Fair instead of about English cottage gardens. I'd turned the heat up so if it DID go out, I'd take longer to freeze to death. It was uncomfortably warm for sleeping, but could have been worse. The migraine is here, but as migraines go, it's fairly manageable. I can't tell how much snow came down. As Linn said, it's drifting all over the place. But the wind did a great job blowing the stuff off trees and, hopefully, my roof. We didn't get the wet stuff the more southern and beachward places got, so the cold is a good thing. About the only thing I know I have to fix is the dome thing on one bird feeder that's come un-screwed, but isn't in any danger of falling and trapping a bird (did that once) because it's being held up by a big seed cylinder. I haven't heard or seen any traffic outside other than the plow. Good! |

And getting out of Montreal was too much of a horror for R to contemplate. The good news was our wonderful neighbour who comes and plows our driveway, gratis! I call him the "snow fairy". Good neighbours are such a gift! The world is beautifully white this morning, and chilly. I was able to shovel the front door free in case we have to get out. The cats are not happy with the wind - nor am I. But it is fun to watch Ralph and Carol blowing their driveway. Mine is strange. The car is absolutely clean. The driveway around it is buried. Parts of the yard are completely clear with green showing through. Parts have five foot drifts. When I was shovelling the front I thought I found a piece of my roof but it was a slice of bread - ????? The bird who nests in the holly bush then started screaming at me - poor thing. I tossed the bread under the bush where she can get it. Tomorrow when the winds die down I will leave her some blueberries. She or her heirs come back every year and nest in the holly. And every year I am greeted by screeching as I leave for work. Great entertainement for the cats. They can't possibly reach her through the branches but can sit in the living room window and glare menacingly. Seems to satisfy all parties involved. Can't help but think of all the homeless people in Portland. Preble Street is trying to find volunteers to help serve meals but there is no way of getting there. Donner Party just went by. Really. I came back in and found one storm window I'd just put all the way up yesterday (just open a sliver at the top) was backwards. A couple of snowball's worth had hit the upper pane and slid down inside the lower. The snow on the yard & porch side of my car was only knee high. The other side was crotch high, and the edge of the driveway where the plow piles up crap from the road is higher. I will wait for a neighbor to plow it. One of them doesn't seem to be home at the moment. The other one isn't either, but I think his day job involves town vehicles. I don't need to go anywhere. |

It snowed the day after and we could not find the keys. When the snow melted in the Spring, they were sitting on the porch railin', right where she put 'em. Lady Hillary and I invested in a catering burner and a pack of butane cartridges for a grand total of about $30. We have had the Coleman type and find they are less stable than the flat burners. By the way, we had about 8" down here in Basking Ridge, NJ. No big deal. We dug out and enjoyed the nearly empty roads on our way to Barnes y Noble. |

I did not lose power, though I've heard homes just a few blocks north of mine did. (My son's family did, too. They live on Aquidneck Island in the middle of Narragansett Bay. Most homes on the island--which has three communities, Newport, Middletown where my son lives, and Portsmouth--lost power.) If any of you have seen Charley Noble's pics on Facebook, the snow in my neighborhood looks a lot like it does in his photos. My shoveling started at the doorstep where about a foot of snow had been blown onto the sill. (One of my friends couldn't get outside because she couldn't push either of her storm doors open against the snow. For once I was glad I don't have storm doors!) I continued to shovel alongside the driver's side of my car. A neighbor told me he would take care of it, but my car had been plowed in after I'd gone to bed last night and I couldn't let him do all of it! Then two young men (who I think work for the plowing company our condo management hired) came and said they'd take care of it and told me to go inside, so I did. About an hour later my neighbor knocked on my door. The shoveling out was done, and he'd cleared my car windows and windshield and suggested I move the car so the plow could do more. My unit is in a corner, and a lot of snow gets pushed into that corner, which can't be happen unless I move my car out of the way. I drove to a little shopping plaza in front of the condos where my neighbor and several others had already parked their cars. I cleaned the rest of the snow off my car and then cleaned a lot of it off my neighbor's car, too. I couldn't get it all because some was jammed under his roof rack. I would have had to push it out with my fingers and even with thick insulated waterproof gloves they were getting cold. When I sat in my car and took off my gloves, my fingers were bright red! There is a nice restaurant nearby, the Cowesett Inn, and within the next few days I'll pick up a gift certificate there for my neighbor and his family. He's refused pay in the past. Oh, and the post office cancelled mail delivery today, so we can no longer say "Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail shall keep the postmen from their appointed rounds." But I'm glad they cancelled. People need to dig out their mailboxes. And my mailman happens to be one of my former students, so I want him to be safe and warm! Now I'll wait to see if we get a special assessment fee from condo management which will happen if we've gone over budget for snow removal. At least we didn't need backhoes and payloaders! |

I cooked a huge boiled ham dinner with spuds and carrots and cabbage and fresh green beans from Florida (FRESH GREEN BEANS! GOD BLESS AMERICA!... they are DEEEElicious!). I did three loads of laundry. I vacuumed and mopped and.... shovelled fuckin snow seven times since 5AM. And I chatted with friends from far and wide. A great day, really. I have seen large ones stall and take over three days to blow out. Snow drifts almost up to the eaves really sucks but these are only about 1.5m high. Yes, it was bad, but I'm a New England girl and a park ranger and I know how to prepare for these things. Wednesday, I went grocery shopping, but I needed to anyway. Made sure I had fixings for beef stew and Friday afternoon I started it. Let it simmer on the stove for a few hours and then put it away for Saturday. Saturday, the stew was absolutely divine. It was actually fun being snowbound for a day or two, great excuse to stay in my PJs and read, watch movies, and play video games. The shoveling this AM was not nearly as much fun, however. Oh, and Portland's record wasn't for 31.9 inches, it was for the amount of snow that fell within those 24 hour periods for those specific dates - 17" on Friday and 14.9 on Saturday. I'm a weather junkie after having to work outside for four winters, and I have NOAA's automated weather info on speed dial. |

I'm pretty sure if I stepped off the back porch the snow would be about chest deep on me (and I'm 5'6") The problem now is there is no place for the dog to "go". However, some school systems were still cancelled today, and one grandfather had his 9-year-old granddaughter join us for an exercise class designed for seniors. Other school systems which were cancelled yesterday reopened today with one-or-two hour delays. Conditions are especially bad in densely populated cities with side roads not being plowed. Providence did have school today, but one bus got stuck in the snow making the road impassible for all residents! Some communities told students they would have to walk to bus stops on main streets. And some communities have given homeowners a deadline of when their sidewalks have to be shoveled or fines will be imposed. Heart attack, anyone? |

As the city takes up to 36 hours before they get around to plowing the sidewalks I take it upon myself to clear the sidewalk (remove snow and salt) on my block. Forecasts in my area, beginning a week ago, predicted a "possible 5 to 7 inches" of snow. We got 12.2", the second largest snowfall ever recorded, only about 3 tenths of an inch short of the local record set >50 years ago. By standards elsewhere, that's hardly even enough to notice, but here 8" is considered a "big one" and although crews are working hard they're not really equipped for much more. More than 200 miles of I70 (a major interstate) have been closed in western Kansas for a couple of days, with many other roads shut down. (A "conservative" attitude toward closing roads here has to consider that just getting stuck in the snow may leave people stranded 50 miles from the nearest farmhouse in some places.) Some of the storm that's moving on eastward is reportedly dropping about as much ICE as snow, although predictions are for (resumed and) continuing snow toward the northeast. Stay Snug. John |

However, there can be extenuating circumstances. In Juneau, in southeast Alaska, city road crews pile snow from the streets onto their shoulders- the sidewalks. Berms can end up as tall as four or five feet. We learn early in the wintertime to walk in the streets- it is much safer. After streets are secured, road crews come back - frequently during the night - and grind down the berms and haul off the snow and ice to wherever they take it. Works fairly well. |

Because Wichita doesn't get lots of deep snow, and often not too cold, they don't have huge budgets for it, or major equipment. It is often a nasty mess. Luckily, it is 'mostly' flat. But out at Wichita State Univ., there are a couple of hills that always snag the unwary. The only time I was ever late to work was when I couldn't get UP a hill to get away from my house. Finally had to go down and around and get a running start on a major street. |

The places where rain or mixed rain/snow is expected may face the worst traffic hazards due to the treacherous nature of icing, especially when it's on top of snow. We don't have to worry much about clearing our sidewalks, because there aren't any in our neighborhood. We haven't been out to see whether the kids who like to play basketball in the street a couple of blocks south have cleared their "court." When the foot of snow that's blocking the front door from coming open melts (or blows away) we'll get out to the mailbox, but we haven't seen the mail truck so we're pretty sure there's nothing there. Snow around our house is about the same as in the first round - so far, but I haven't been able to find any "official" reports that are very useful. Much of the first round snow melted in the one day of sunshine we had between, and it looks like sort of a rerun now. Headlines say "it snowed in Kansas" but that's not very helpful when the state is 400 miles E/W and 200 N/S. Reports that "lots of highways are closed" are similarly (un)specific. The "blizzard level" winds were similarly vague, but didn't happen here. Several reports said winds of 45 mph to 75 mph, but didn't say WHERE. Several reports said "30,000 without power" but it took a 30 minute search to find out that most of those were in the Kansas City (KS and Missouri) areas. Five TV channels (of the ones I get with a little antenna) were off the air for about an hour last night, but they wouldn't have had anything but "paid programming" anyway. The city here is saying traffic problems will be "the worst we've had" tomorrow morning, but I'm beginning to be a disbeliever. Maybe they're just talking about the fact that they've run out of salt and will actually have to plow most of it(?). Reports I've been able to find for other parts of the country are similarly vague, but it does appear that flooding may be more of a problem east/southeast of here than snow/ice. Expectations for severe weather in the northeast (New England etc) appear to have been scaled back significantly, but the prognosticators don't seem to have any really believable predictions for anywhere in the US. They're so confused about this one that now they're talking (vacuously) about the "next one that's on the way." So far all I've heard is that the next one "is colder." (???) John |

The official tally for Wichita is 6.8 inches yesterday, which brings the total for the past week to 21 inches, breaking the 100 year old record for snow in a single month here. (Note that we got more snow in ONE WEEK than has ever been recorded before for an entire MONTH, but that doesn't really mean it amounted to all that much, since the first half melted before the second half of it fell.) Traffic officials have discovered a "new explanation" for their prediction that traffic problems may be worse tomorrow (Tuesday) morning with their observation that the new LED traffic lights they've been installing busily don't get warm enough to melt the snow off the lenses like the old bulbs did. When I lived in western RI, I would take forecasts for Worcester, MA, more seriously than the forecasts for Providence, And RI stations have never cared much about road conditions in western and southern RI, just the more "metropolitan" areas. |

I must say the climate was quite an eye-opener for us Brits, even the Scottish party! We didn't get heavy snow-falls (there was plenty there already) but temperatures of -20C are pretty bracing! Apparently in January it had dropped to -35C, which with the wind chill was close to -60C! I asked one of the resort workers what he wore on days like that and he said 'seriously, everything I own'. Later in the week we heard the forecast for somewhere down on the St Lawrence - 40 cms of overnight snow, 30 the next day, and 70 kilometre winds. That sounds like a good time to stay inside. Meanwhile back here in Edinburgh the sun is shining, and Stornoway in the Hebrides has reached +12C! good luck to any of you suffering from really bad weather -KP |
