Tell ya, I'd give someone's left nut if we could get a reliable weather forecast here. Once again the weather channels on the i'net have predicted 2-4 cm. It's already over 8 cm and it don't show signs of stopping anytime soon. I'm wondering how the pair of snow geese are doing. They stayed over this winter--I expect one of them was a bit injured and they are fiercely loyal to each other.

It's -4 in Fahrenheit.
We're getting some wet snow, after rain. I shoveled a lot of water earlier and tried to dig a channel, but my driveway is a pond. I just bought a 50 lb bag of enviro-melt stuff (because it's not going to stay wet) and parked on high ground. (And bought yogurt and cookies. I still have stew. TMI? Who cares?)

Hi, KP. That was us you heard about with the 30cm and 40cm snows and 70km/hr winds. Truth is we are used to it, and where -20 might seem cold, it's just past chilly when you've lived here for a while. Of course, we wear something over our t-shirts when it gets nipply out.

Just back from my first visit to Canada, ski-ing at Mount Tremblant in the Laurentians. I must say the climate was quite an eye-opener for us Brits, even the Scottish party! We didn't get heavy snow-falls (there was plenty there already) but temperatures of -20C are pretty bracing! Apparently in January it had dropped to -35C, which with the wind chill was close to -60C! I asked one of the resort workers what he wore on days like that and he said 'seriously, everything I own'. Later in the week we heard the forecast for somewhere down on the St Lawrence - 40 cms of overnight snow, 30 the next day, and 70 kilometre winds. That sounds like a good time to stay inside.

Meanwhile back here in Edinburgh the sun is shining, and Stornoway in the Hebrides has reached +12C!

I dunno about youse down below but up here "significant" has come to mean 10cm (even 5 to 10cm). "Significant" startles a lot of people older than me because they don't understand the term as it is used on the evening news. It's used to make them stay tuned for the next hour so they view all the TV adverts. 10cm is a "skiff" to me. If it accompanied by high wind, I may have to shovel near the doors... maybe not. If there is no significant wind forecast, I just get pissed off at the weather terrorists for trying to scare the elderly for ratings.

I heard on the national news that your part of the country got socked again. Sorry to hear it. While there may be significant snow in northern and western New England, in my part of RI we expect mostly rain this time. As small as RI is, the rain/snow dividing line can cut across it. Northwestern RI may get much more snow than most of the state. When I lived in western RI, I would take forecasts for Worcester, MA, more seriously than the forecasts for Providence, And RI stations have never cared much about road conditions in western and southern RI, just the more "metropolitan" areas.

Latest guesstimate is that there's nothing left of the latest storm in Kansas except a few scattered flurries that won't amount to much.

The official tally for Wichita is 6.8 inches yesterday, which brings the total for the past week to 21 inches, breaking the 100 year old record for snow in a single month here. (Note that we got more snow in ONE WEEK than has ever been recorded before for an entire MONTH, but that doesn't really mean it amounted to all that much, since the first half melted before the second half of it fell.)

Traffic officials have discovered a "new explanation" for their prediction that traffic problems may be worse tomorrow (Tuesday) morning with their observation that the new LED traffic lights they've been installing busily don't get warm enough to melt the snow off the lenses like the old bulbs did.

Ain't progress wunnerful?

Most ot the "second pass" front appears to have passed through here, although the best information I've found indicates we might get a little additional snow later today.

Snow around our house is about the same as in the first round - so far, but I haven't been able to find any "official" reports that are very useful. Much of the first round snow melted in the one day of sunshine we had between, and it looks like sort of a rerun now.

Headlines say "it snowed in Kansas" but that's not very helpful when the state is 400 miles E/W and 200 N/S. Reports that "lots of highways are closed" are similarly (un)specific. The "blizzard level" winds were similarly vague, but didn't happen here. Several reports said winds of 45 mph to 75 mph, but didn't say WHERE.

Several reports said "30,000 without power" but it took a 30 minute search to find out that most of those were in the Kansas City (KS and Missouri) areas. Five TV channels (of the ones I get with a little antenna) were off the air for about an hour last night, but they wouldn't have had anything but "paid programming" anyway.

The city here is saying traffic problems will be "the worst we've had" tomorrow morning, but I'm beginning to be a disbeliever. Maybe they're just talking about the fact that they've run out of salt and will actually have to plow most of it(?).

Reports I've been able to find for other parts of the country are similarly vague, but it does appear that flooding may be more of a problem east/southeast of here than snow/ice.

Expectations for severe weather in the northeast (New England etc) appear to have been scaled back significantly, but the prognosticators don't seem to have any really believable predictions for anywhere in the US. They're so confused about this one that now they're talking (vacuously) about the "next one that's on the way." So far all I've heard is that the next one "is colder." (???)

Storm expected to give New England third straight weekend of snow

The report doesn't give much detailed information, but as expected it does mentioned some places running out of money in their budgets for snow removal and other weather related responses. I'm not sure Kansas even had a budget for it.

The places where rain or mixed rain/snow is expected may face the worst traffic hazards due to the treacherous nature of icing, especially when it's on top of snow.

We don't have to worry much about clearing our sidewalks, because there aren't any in our neighborhood. We haven't been out to see whether the kids who like to play basketball in the street a couple of blocks south have cleared their "court." When the foot of snow that's blocking the front door from coming open melts (or blows away) we'll get out to the mailbox, but we haven't seen the mail truck so we're pretty sure there's nothing there.

I was living in Wichita for the record snow in 1962, but I remember a couple of other times when it wasn't as deep, but blew & drifted in nasty ways (about 1970 or 71).
Because Wichita doesn't get lots of deep snow, and often not too cold, they don't have huge budgets for it, or major equipment. It is often a nasty mess. Luckily, it is 'mostly' flat. But out at Wichita State Univ., there are a couple of hills that always snag the unwary.
The only time I was ever late to work was when I couldn't get UP a hill to get away from my house. Finally had to go down and around and get a running start on a major street.

In Alaska, as in most of the US, it is the homeowner's responsibility to clear the sidewalk/UK pavement of snow or debris. However, there can be extenuating circumstances.

In Juneau, in southeast Alaska, city road crews pile snow from the streets onto their shoulders- the sidewalks. Berms can end up as tall as four or five feet. We learn early in the wintertime to walk in the streets- it is much safer.

After streets are secured, road crews come back - frequently during the night - and grind down the berms and haul off the snow and ice to wherever they take it.

Works fairly well.

Yes, JiK. 8" of snow for you is like at least 3 to 4 times that for us because we maintain the equipment, staff and plans to deal with it. And, youse are far more susceptible to "ice" because it would be more likely in a storm and because your power infrastructure is older.

It's all relative.

sIx... some little old ladies have neighbours who are little old ladies. Surely the jurisdictional authority could sort out the facts and not fine such people? Maybe they could help out in such cases? I heard there was shortage of jobs for young able bodied sorts, no? I still say they are heartless bastards!

News reports say IT'S COMING BACK AGAIN.

Forecasts in my area, beginning a week ago, predicted a "possible 5 to 7 inches" of snow. We got 12.2", the second largest snowfall ever recorded, only about 3 tenths of an inch short of the local record set >50 years ago.

By standards elsewhere, that's hardly even enough to notice, but here 8" is considered a "big one" and although crews are working hard they're not really equipped for much more.

More than 200 miles of I70 (a major interstate) have been closed in western Kansas for a couple of days, with many other roads shut down. (A "conservative" attitude toward closing roads here has to consider that just getting stuck in the snow may leave people stranded 50 miles from the nearest farmhouse in some places.) Some of the storm that's moving on eastward is reportedly dropping about as much ICE as snow, although predictions are for (resumed and) continuing snow toward the northeast.

Interesting aspect about clearing private drives in the UK. If anyone slips and injures themselves, the person who cleared the snow is liable. Many householders therefore won't do it for fear of the postman slipping...

There are no bylaws here in Saint John for property owners to clear the (city owned) sidewalks in front of their property. I'm amazed how many people will not make the effort to clean the snow off their front sidewalks, but they make damned sure their driveways are cleared. As the city takes up to 36 hours before they get around to plowing the sidewalks I take it upon myself to clear the sidewalk (remove snow and salt) on my block. Sure, it's not my property but after seeing the elderly and mothers pushing stollers on the street, with cars whizzing by I felt I had to do it.

The city of Portland, Maine has an ordinance that property owners are required to clear the sidewalks in front of their property within 24 hours after the storm has stopped. If you don't they issue a warning; if the warning is ignored they clear it themselves and issue a fine.
Luckily I live in South Portland and I rent. :-)

For me, yesterday and today were a usual Monday and Tuesday. I went to classes at the Y. However, some school systems were still cancelled today, and one grandfather had his 9-year-old granddaughter join us for an exercise class designed for seniors. Other school systems which were cancelled yesterday reopened today with one-or-two hour delays. Conditions are especially bad in densely populated cities with side roads not being plowed. Providence did have school today, but one bus got stuck in the snow making the road impassible for all residents! Some communities told students they would have to walk to bus stops on main streets. And some communities have given homeowners a deadline of when their sidewalks have to be shoveled or fines will be imposed. Heart attack, anyone?

We got about 30" at my place. The niece and I managed to shovel our way from the front door to the driveway (taking several shifts to do so). The landlord completely plowed the driveway finally at 9pm LAST NIGHT but we didn't need to be anywhere anyway. I won't be using the back door until spring. I'm pretty sure if I stepped off the back porch the snow would be about chest deep on me (and I'm 5'6")
The problem now is there is no place for the dog to "go". Not my dog so I'm not going to shovel out a poop patch, either.

That was nowhere near the worst storm I've seen. Yes, it was bad, but I'm a New England girl and a park ranger and I know how to prepare for these things. Wednesday, I went grocery shopping, but I needed to anyway. Made sure I had fixings for beef stew and Friday afternoon I started it. Let it simmer on the stove for a few hours and then put it away for Saturday. Saturday, the stew was absolutely divine. It was actually fun being snowbound for a day or two, great excuse to stay in my PJs and read, watch movies, and play video games. The shoveling this AM was not nearly as much fun, however.

Oh, and Portland's record wasn't for 31.9 inches, it was for the amount of snow that fell within those 24 hour periods for those specific dates - 17" on Friday and 14.9 on Saturday. I'm a weather junkie after having to work outside for four winters, and I have NOAA's automated weather info on speed dial.

From what I heard on today's news, in the US the state hit worst may have been Connecticut. Late this afternoon I carried my trash to one of three dumpsters on the condo property. The one nearest my unit had not been dug out, but the other two had, so I used one of those. Then I drove to the Cowesett Inn, ate dinner, and bought the gift certificate for the family of the man who did most of the work digging out my car.

Two feet of snow blowing around here was pretty managable. It was easier to clean off empty streets, though. It seems folks in New York didn't pay attention and clogged the Long Island Expressway with folks trying to make it home from work.

We only got about 40cm (16") with winds 60 gusting to 90kph (although I know we had gusts higher - when my hip roof creeks I do not use my back door) so it wasn't bad. Still snowin. Often, these Noreasters come up the coast, up the Bay of Fundy and stall when they become "trapped" between the Appalachians and the cold air of the North Atlantic. I have seen large ones stall and take over three days to blow out. Snow drifts almost up to the eaves really sucks but these are only about 1.5m high.

Rain Tuesday... now, THAT sucks!

Well, the damn thing did what these storms often do here. Comes from the west and/or south and sometimes the east as well and upon arriving here... STALLS and just rotates until it blows itself out.

All around us... nada. On top of us... snow and wind, lessening by the hour but not leaving. The power is on. I rescued my new laptop from certain death after an ISP hiccup. I cooked a huge boiled ham dinner with spuds and carrots and cabbage and fresh green beans from Florida (FRESH GREEN BEANS! GOD BLESS AMERICA!... they are DEEEElicious!). I did three loads of laundry. I vacuumed and mopped and.... shovelled fuckin snow seven times since 5AM.

And I chatted with friends from far and wide.

A great day, really. Thanks to being able to chat with all you wonderful folks. Thank you.

Malden, MA here. It was powder, deposited well below freezing, so it drifted quite a bit. About 2 ft in front of my house. My street (a thorofare) has been kept open. I have not lost any of my utilities. I tried out my old snowshoes, but they were too small to do any good. Public transit is shut down today, but may be back again tomorrow.

We definitely had a blizzard here, and like others who have posted we had the merging of the two storms. I did not lose power, though I've heard homes just a few blocks north of mine did. (My son's family did, too. They live on Aquidneck Island in the middle of Narragansett Bay. Most homes on the island--which has three communities, Newport, Middletown where my son lives, and Portsmouth--lost power.) If any of you have seen Charley Noble's pics on Facebook, the snow in my neighborhood looks a lot like it does in his photos. My shoveling started at the doorstep where about a foot of snow had been blown onto the sill. (One of my friends couldn't get outside because she couldn't push either of her storm doors open against the snow. For once I was glad I don't have storm doors!) I continued to shovel alongside the driver's side of my car. A neighbor told me he would take care of it, but my car had been plowed in after I'd gone to bed last night and I couldn't let him do all of it! Then two young men (who I think work for the plowing company our condo management hired) came and said they'd take care of it and told me to go inside, so I did. About an hour later my neighbor knocked on my door. The shoveling out was done, and he'd cleared my car windows and windshield and suggested I move the car so the plow could do more. My unit is in a corner, and a lot of snow gets pushed into that corner, which can't be happen unless I move my car out of the way. I drove to a little shopping plaza in front of the condos where my neighbor and several others had already parked their cars. I cleaned the rest of the snow off my car and then cleaned a lot of it off my neighbor's car, too. I couldn't get it all because some was jammed under his roof rack. I would have had to push it out with my fingers and even with thick insulated waterproof gloves they were getting cold. When I sat in my car and took off my gloves, my fingers were bright red! There is a nice restaurant nearby, the Cowesett Inn, and within the next few days I'll pick up a gift certificate there for my neighbor and his family. He's refused pay in the past. Oh, and the post office cancelled mail delivery today, so we can no longer say "Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail shall keep the postmen from their appointed rounds." But I'm glad they cancelled. People need to dig out their mailboxes. And my mailman happens to be one of my former students, so I want him to be safe and warm! Now I'll wait to see if we get a special assessment fee from condo management which will happen if we've gone over budget for snow removal. At least we didn't need backhoes and payloaders!

Many yeahs ago, I was with some friends outsidah Augustie. The lady of the house had a propensity for losing things. For a special suprise, I bought her a hoss bangle for Thanksgiving and attached it to her keys. It snowed the day after and we could not find the keys. When the snow melted in the Spring, they were sitting on the porch railin', right where she put 'em.

Lady Hillary and I invested in a catering burner and a pack of butane cartridges for a grand total of about $30. We have had the Coleman type and find they are less stable than the flat burners.

By the way, we had about 8" down here in Basking Ridge, NJ. No big deal. We dug out and enjoyed the nearly empty roads on our way to Barnes y Noble.

Oh, gotta pass this on. It's a year or so out of date, as our governor is now Maggie Hassan. John Lynch was an exceptionally good gov but Maggie is awesome. She was smart enough yesterday to NOT ban driving in New Hampshire -- she said (or words to the effect), "People in New Hampshire are smart enough to stay off the roads unless it's necessary and they'll drive accordingly."

Last I heard (saw -- at WMUR's website), Nottingham got 18 inches. One side of my deck is cleaner than it is in warm weather. Prolly a foot or so on most of the deck and then the steps (other side) are mostly clean. I need another nap and I don't have to go anywhere, so I won't clear the deck off until tomorrow. My plow guy will probably be back for another swipe now that it's stopped and to clean up the driveway a bit. Maybe he'll shovel in front of the door.

Tomorrow I can figure out where he put my car, if he didn't put it back at the head of the driveway, and bring it back down to the house. (If it's not there, it's just up the hill at a cleared entrance to my up-the-hill neighbor's field.)

Reports on the boobtube were that Portland has gotten 30 inches which is some sort of record......not sure what though.

When ya have enough snow that ya can't find a damned thing, well, then you've had snow. You Canucks figure we need a Canadian thread on this or is it worth it to y'all?
