Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Welcome Home to Glasgow From: GUEST,John Graham Date: 12 Aug 14 - 02:21 PM I don't know whether the original poster is still interested in the words of the song as it was over a year ago but here they are. Welcome Home Tae Glasgow Chorus Welcome home tae Glasgow where doors will open wide, Friendly faces meet you as you step inside, All their songs and stories you'll be hearing soon, Welcome home tae Glasgow it's still going roon and roon. There's been changes to our city, Townhead tae Kelvinside, Wi' motorways tae everywhere and tunnels for the Clyde, More towers on the skyline but sadly fewer cranes, Glasgow's face is changing, but it's heart remains the same. Chorus Welcome home etc. The Clan has come together, That once was scattered wide, Our exiled sons and daughters, the children of the Clyde, From just across the border or land across the foam, We'll toast our friendly city, good health and welcome home. Chorus Welcome home etc. All the best from the Clydesiders |
Subject: Lyr Add: MANDELA DANCED IN THE SQUARE From: Scabby Douglas Date: 24 Jul 14 - 11:16 AM I was mistaken (apparently) when I suggested that the lyrics were on the Scotland's Songs site, so here they are: Ian Davison's song:Mandela Danced In The Square We'd sung about him for years, And there were speeches everywhere. But I'll never forget the cheers, When Mandela danced in the square. When Nelson came to Glagow, after all his pain, Ten thousand people met him, and listened in the rain. The big umbrellas folded, and many heads were bare. But every face was shining, when Mandela danced in the square. We'd sung about him for years, And there were speeches everywhere. But I'll never forget the cheers, When Mandela danced in the square. When Nelson talked of duty, you could feel us hold our breath, We were just a bit uneasy, when Nelson talked of death, And when he talked of trouble, there was tension in the air, But we faced the future smiling, when Mandela danced in the square. We'd sung about him for years, And there were speeches everywhere. But I'll never forget the cheers, When Mandela danced in the square. When Nelson came to meet us, we made our feelings clear. We heard the songs and speeches, and we clapped and stamped and cheered. We heard of peace, and justice, and the freedom that we share, But we shook the City Chambers, when Mandela danced in the square. We'd sung about him for years, And there were speeches everywhere. But I'll never forget the cheers, When Mandela danced in the square. Well, Nelson came to Glasgow, to show us he was free, The greatest man in Africa, and gave us his decrees, A giant with a suit and tie, and sober face and hair, But the welcome seemed to move him and Mandela danced in the square. We'd sung about him for years, And there were speeches everywhere. But I'll never forget the cheers, When Mandela danced in the square. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Welcome Home to Glasgow From: GUEST,John Graham Date: 23 Jul 14 - 04:20 AM Just came across this thread when thinking it would have been a good song for the Commonwealth Games and had been recorded by the Clydesiders as used for the games volunteers. I was a member of the band along with Sandy Kelso from it's inception in 1968, and indeed still am, although we play rarely these days. The track was indeed on an album 'Wild Mountain Thyme' and was written largely by Sandy, although I think maybe Duncan had some input. . I don't think that the track is available these days though some of the old stuff is on ITunes. I do have it myself if anyone was desperate for the words. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Welcome Home to Glasgow From: Scabby Douglas Date: 21 Feb 14 - 08:32 AM Ian Davison's song lyrics, music and a recording can be found at the following Scottish schools site. http://www.educationscotland.gov.uk/scotlandssongs/index.asp It's a great resource, curated by Ewan McVicar. Ian's song can be found at this URL http://www.educationscotland.gov.uk/scotlandssongs/primary/genericcontent_tcm4554521.asp |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Welcome Home to Glasgow From: Tattie Bogle Date: 20 Feb 14 - 06:01 PM I looked out my Clydesiders tape too but couldn't find it on there. You might try Duncan McCrone, who was in the Clydesiders and, I think still works for M.C.P.S. in Glasgow. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Welcome Home to Glasgow From: GUEST,Tony Date: 18 Feb 14 - 05:36 PM I'm looking for this song too I'm sure I had it on a cydesiders tape but can't find it anywhere |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Welcome Home to Glasgow From: Anne Neilson Date: 11 Mar 13 - 03:40 PM From what the original poster said, I suspect that Megan L's clicky link could well be the song mentioned -- written by a friend of mine Ian Davison (a Glasgow songwriter with a lot of good songs, such as 'When Mandela danced in the Square' about the occasion when Nelson Mandela was granted the Freedom of Glasgow in the City Chambers on George Square). Ian's 'I'm going home to Glasgow' song has a catchy tune and a wordy chorus which isn't always picked up on the first listening.... Finally, ignore the link's spelling of Ian's surname, which is - properly - without an internal letter 'd'. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Welcome Home to Glasgow From: GUEST,Banjiman Date: 11 Mar 13 - 08:39 AM Here's a new "Glasgow" song by Wendy Arrowsmith Glasgow's With Me Just thought it might of interest. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Welcome Home to Glasgow From: Tattie Bogle Date: 11 Mar 13 - 06:06 AM Not the song you're looking for, but worth mentioning on this thread, is "I wish I was in Glasgow" by Billy Connolly: several versions on YouTube. Possibly 'catters Ewan McVicar or Adam McNaughtan might know? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Welcome Home to Glasgow From: Jim Dixon Date: 10 Mar 13 - 06:41 PM I found a reference to an album "Wild Mountain Thyme" that contains the following songs: Wild Mountain Thyme / Glasgow Lullaby / There Was a Lad / Suite (Dr Finlay's Casebook) / Para Handy Polka / Sponge Trumpet Hornpipe (Captain Pugwash) / Welcome Home to Glasgow / My Love Is Like a Red Red Rose / Home to the Kyles / Lowlands Low / Bumie Boozie / If Wishes Were Fishes / Barren Rocks of Aden / La Russe / Cadder Woods / River / Corn Rigs. The track list comes from page 20 of a book called The Great Scots Musicography by Martin C Strong (Edinburgh: Mercat, 2002). Google classifies this book as "snippet view only" which I why I am unable to see the artist's name, label, or date, but anyone who can get hold of this book should be able to find that data. By the way, the phrase "Welcome home to Glasgow" was the slogan of a 1983 advertising campaign meant to attract tourists to Glasgow. Maybe there was some connection. |

Subject: Lyr Req: Welcome Home to Glasgow From: GUEST,Jacqued Date: 08 Feb 13 - 02:42 PM Greetings! Has anyone the lyrics to 'Welcome Home to Glasgow'? The fist full line is, I believe, ' 'Welcome home to Glasgow, where doors are open wide'. Many of my friends at the club seem to know the first line, but tend to mumble after that! Many thanks, Ed |
